I have never had a debt collector call me until today.

I was told I owe money to a whack ass school I attended.

I never took out a student loan, but I supposedly owe money to the school for classes I did not pass or finish.

Can a debt collector call over something that is not a loan? What can I do (besides pay) to get them to leave me alone?

I am new to all of this.

I had a similar experience a year ago. Never had a problem with my credit. Didn't even realize there was an issue, till I got a call from a collections agency.

I did just about everything wrong from that point forward. Came to an agreement over the phone with nothing in writing. Now I am having to live with six more years of a reduced credit rating because I didn't know the proper way to address a 44.00 dollar tank of gas that I never got a bill for.

Never pay a dime till they send you written proof of the debt. The credit collection agency is required to provide you with written proof by law, it is your right to ask for it. If they can't provide proof, you are off the hook for the debt.

Does not really matter when you entered into the debt.

This is exactly why banks are raising their fees. People used to do everything possible to pay off their debts. Now, not so much.

Too many people today wear defaulting on debt as a badge of honor.

I once had to default on a debt some years ago. Didn't have much of a choice, but I still felt ashamed when I called the bank.

Fortunately, they ended up accepting less than the full amount, but I will never ever be a landlord again.

This is the right attitude to have.

Bad poo happens and sometimes you have no choice financially. But, as DD said, it is nothing to be non-chalant and even proud I'd.

Bankruptcy and debt forgiveness is there to assist those who are trying to make it work but need assistance. But, it has become ridiculously more than that.

The posts and attitudes in this thread are a big reason for the financial crisis. People are too quick to borrow more than they can afford and are even quicker to think it is great to default.

Work with the cc companies and banks if you are in trouble. But, I believe in paying all the debt you owe.

Well I'm sorry that I made a mistake in my early 20's and have since learned from it and I'm now more responsible.I'm sure I am the only one that has done so in the history of mankindand and it is me alone that caused the horrific finacial crisis that we're currently in now

I just was using your situation as an example. My comment was really aimed at everyone else who was telling the guy to just ignore their calls. Too many peopel today want something for free and to just not pay your debts. It is a HUGE problem today.

Kind of off the subject but for those of you who are just starting out with your credit....when I was younger I got overwhelmed with credit card debt and fell behind...when filling out a credit application, don't ever EVER put down your work number. If for some reason you fall behind, those relentless sons of bitches won't think twice about calling your place of employment 'wanting a payment' and leaving a message with your co-workers as well

I've ignored them myself...and I've paid for it. fuging your credit up sucks and it WILL come back and bite you in the ass.

my situation in more detail.. we were actually refinancing our house to take money out to do some major upgrades. Out of the X amount of money that we wanted to pull out, I HAD to pay off that credit card....I was already in my house and was able to pay for it...I wanted the most amount of money to put back into my house so I wanted to get that pay off down to as little as possible.

and I agree with you on slack mofo's that run up a huge bill only to walk away from it...it makes me want to dickhole punch them

Collection agencies will work with you if they aren't complete dicks.

Just tell them what you can afford. If you make monthly payments they won't harass you.

They get paid to collect money, so they'll take whatever they can get.

I think I was paying like 20 or 50 dollars a month until I got a real job. They were content to let me pay the entire 750ish off with monthly payments of that amount, but fortunately with the better job I was able to just pay it in full after a couple months.

My wife's little brother was stabbed and killed October of last year, and just a few weeks ago collectors started calling her looking for him for the ambulance ride. I told them what happened and said if they continue to call and harass her I will find where they are and cut their throats. They haven't called back yet. It's only been about a week though so we'll see.
