Panthers Running Back Tauren Poole Strives To Be Like Arian Foster (Great Read)

CHARLOTTE - As an undrafted rookie free agent joining a Panthers roster that includes a pair of Pro Bowl-caliber running backs,Tauren Pooleicon-article-link.gif doesn't have to feel like he has big shoes to fill.

But as the first undrafted back out of the University of Tennessee with a 1,000-yard season to his credit since Arian Foster, Poole sure would like to follow in some footsteps.

"He's a good example for me," Poole said of Foster, who won the 2010 NFL rushing crown and has compiled 2,840 yards over the last two seasons for the Houston Texans. "I saw a lot of flashes at Tennessee, but I didn't know he was going to blow up like this.

"He was like a big brother to me at Tennessee, kind of like a mentor. With this process, he encouraged me to stay patient, keep working and play football like I've been playing it my entire life."

Poole also would like to take a page from Foster's book after a strikingly similar college experience.

Foster rushed for 1,193 yards as a junior in 2007 but only 566 yards as a senior, He wasn't drafted, and the Texans were the fortunate team to pick him up.

Poole rushed for 1,034 yards as a junior in 2010 but just 693 yards last season.

Now Poole, like Foster before him, will strive to impress leading up to his rookie season after failing to be picked in the draft.

"I wasn't mad, but I was surprised. That's just the way it goes," Poole said. "That's what happened, and now I've got to work with the opportunity I've gotten with the Panthers. I'm attacking it the best I can."

Poole may be able to squeak on the roster if he can beat out Vaughn for the final running back spot.

Why sign with us...fire your agent

His career isn't going to end if we don't keep him. Maybe he wants to learn by playing with the best...

No way. Sorry.

Foster was a great back at Tenn, who somehow was overlooked by 32 teams.

This dude, never heard of him. I'm just being realistic.

It helps if you watch college football.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
