One thing most people forget is that while DDay was underway, another armada was on its way to the Marianas to hit the Japanese. 2 Marine and one Army division, along with a good chunk of the US Pacific fleet set sail from Pearl Harbor on June 5th destined for Saipan. Its really amazing how the US was able to build a force that could take on Japan almost single handedly and still play a big part in the Normandy invasion.

Yeah due to the cold war we sometimes overlook how many people the Russians lost. Over 20 million.....

That was one of the reasons they wanted control of the countries on their border...a buffer against the same thing happening.

Haven't looked it up, but I thought the planes were off because of cloud cover. They dropped bombs, but were really off target. I could be remembering wrong, though. *off to google*

Yep. Ways to calculate bombing runs on cloudy days is what paved the way for creating machines that compute.

I was going to google, but ended up researching more about my uncle instead. If anyone knows how to crop a picture from a pdf format, please help. Found him in his plane, but can't figure out how the hell to cut the other stuff off the page. Yes, I know, I'm an idiot. The kids aren't home to help.

The Russians really chewed up the German army. No way Normandy happens without the German army being bled on the Eastern Front.

Russians fought with numbers and not brains. Its a miracle both of my great grandpas came back home alive. One of em been shot bunch a times, he would comeback heal for a month and then they sent his ass back into war.

Fwiw, Zhukov and some of the others were pretty smart, and the Russians could fight smart when they wanted to. They just didn't seem to care so much about losses. Not like the Americans and British did anyway.

I was told numerous times this past semester by my military history professor and ex-marine that 8 out of every 10 German soldiers killed during WWII were killed by a Russian. We must not forget the sacrifices made by generations before us.
