Well, you can lol all you want, but the proof is in the numbers...

Martin had a better vertical jump...36" to Smiths 34"

broad jump...Martin-10' 3" Smith-9'11"

3 cone...Martin-6.60 Smith-6.98

and 20yd shuttle...Martin-3.98 Smith-4.16

The 3 cone and 20yd shuttle are the most important drills for a DB, as far as I'm concerned, because nobody is gonna just run go routes against you all day long in the pros.

Smith has actually played the position he was drafted for. Just sayin

the only reason we took..martin over smith was he fit the scheme more..not because he was a better CB..a guy sean smith size that can play CB does not come along often..but we took martin over smith so i trust the FO..when it comes to the draft

plus martin is not a lock..for #3..munnerlyn has been showing up big

Teams were scared off of Smith because he did not tackle and may have to play safety in the NFL. If you are an expert of either Troy or Utah football then I guess you could LOL.... Dj Moore had lack of size and had disappointing 40 times. Smith is soft and does not run as fast as scouts would like.

Martin has sideline to sideline speed and is 6'1" which is a tall cb in the NFL. I feel confident we made the right albeit not sexy choice. Irvin is the one I am a little iffy about in the whole draft.

That and the fact that Martin can actually tackle. The only reason Smith is still getting mentioned is because OMG TALL and the youtube of the one handed INT.

Munnerlyn will be a Wesley type for us, I doubt he pushes Martin much, if at all, barring injury.

How much do you wanna bet that Smith ends up playing safety?

Yeah, I really don't see him at corner. It would be a rare athete to play CB at that height, because you tend to lose the ability to change directions as quickly as you have to. WRs like Steve Smith would destroy him.

Sean Smith might have a great pro career, but he's not a rare athlete, and so I don't see him at CB.

The Dolphins will keep second-round pick Sean Smith at cornerback.

Smith dabbled at safety and nickel back at Utah, but the Fins will try to develop the 6'4/214-pounder into a corner that can lock down bigger receivers. He could be starting as soon as 2010. Miami already has an open competition at right corner and LCB Will Allen is entering a contract season.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2009/05/thinks-i-learned-at-camp.html

Dolphins beat writer Omar Kelly expects both Sean Smith and Vontae Davis to earn starting cornerback jobs as rookies.

Bill Parcells & Co. like to go with their own guys, and one of Parcells' mantras is "If they don't bite as pups they probably don't bite." Smith is lining up on Will Allen's right side, with Davis manning the vacant left side. Kelly "suspects" Allen will return to a nickel back role.

He may start out there, but we will see if he stays there. I'm sure they're thinking that being 6'4" will help him handle guys like Randy Moss, who they will have to face twice a year, but I believe that Moss will torch him.

With as much playing time as they see i honestly think that we "start" 3 corners.

I think marshall will hold the same position he has had since he's been here which is the slot. Martin will play outside.

Marshall isn't the replacement for Lucas, Martin is.

I'm 100% positive this will be the case, but I don't know whose name will be with the 1st stringers on the offense.

Speaking of martin, i was re-reading the sporting news draft mag and even though I can't find him in the rankings, they said martin was a perfect fit for us at corner, wierd.

I disagree. I see Marshall as a good replacement for Lucas. He has showed in his rookie season that he could cover starting WRs and the only one that really burned him was Plexico. He regressed last year but I have a feeling our new DC and DB coach are not gonna let that happen again.

Im not quite so sure Munnerlyn makes it unless he's outstanding on KR or PR. He's only 5'8 which reminds me of Ricky Manning, Jr and we all know how he ended up.

Marshall for Manning JR was the best deal ever IMO.

    • I understand the concerns--he is not P. Sewell or Joe Thomas.  He has technique issues and was not great in the run game and was good in pass protection when UGA did not pass much.  Then there is the immediate need vs long term need perspective.   I did not see Freeland being there-frankly. Here is why:   He has nearly 35" arms and his hands are large (10.5").  He ran a 4.93 40 at the combine.  He is very agile.  His vertical was 33.5".   Physically, he is a freak. He is 21 and he seems very intelligent (coachable). You have to remember, some of these rookies are 24, 25 years old. Freeling is A team player.  His shortcomings are fixable.  Short arms (as with the kids from Utah and Miami) are not fixable.  The Run on OTs began at #9: Fano (picked 10 picks earlier) has 32" arms and his hands are 9".  He did not play in the SEC like Freeling.  Many think the short arms project him to guard. Mauigoa (picked 10th) has 33" arms.  He is a solid player, but his arms make him borderline as a T (they seek 34" and up as ideal)  Kayden Proctor (picked 12th overall) struggled in pass protection and projects by many to RT or G.  Weight management is a concern. So it is possible that Freeling will be the first LT taken who actually plays LT.  (he also has the ability and experience to play RT)  His questions are fixable and not limited to physical limitations.  Here is the question:  If you know that you need a Tackle, and you could choose between all four of these players, who would you pick? I am not sure that Freeling would not be the player I selected if given the opportunity to take any of them.
    • The more I think about this pick the more I like it. The Icky injury might end up being a blessing in disguise for everyone except Icky unfortunately. If Freeling pans out at LT the Panthers have a good player on a rookie contract at a premium position at a time when they’re going to need to potentially pay Bryce for his next contract. Icky was likely going to command a big salary jump for his next contract and now, there’s a strong justification he’s not going to be worth a big money extension until he rehabs and proves he can still play at a high level. Since he’s finishing his rookie deal this season, it will be interesting to see if the Panthers bring him back for the 2027 season. Obviously it’s too early to say and they will probably wait to see how the season pans out with Moton still elite but aging and clearly battling persistent injuries, and they need to see if Freeling can develop into a starter during his rookie year. But ultimately this might have opened up a huge chunk of salary cap for the next 4-5 years.
    • You read my mind Nastradamus! If Rodriguez is still there I feel like it will be hard to pass on him. And one of these TE we keep drafting have to hit eventually and Delp is just as good as the others.
