PreSeason Game #1: Panthers/Texans

Personally, I can't fugging wait to see Tolbert in the backfield. Whether he's blocking or got the ball in his hands, I think dude is one helluva addition to what is already one of the nastiest rushing attacks in the league and I can't wait to see him prove it on the field.

Also wanting to get a good look at Beason, Kuechly, TD and the rest of our LB corp flying around making contact on fools. Hopefully our DLine can occupy enough of Houston's OLinemen for Kuechly to make a HUGE impression in his first live action. Obviously with a healthy and improved front 7 our DB's will hopefully not be put in as many pressure situations, but I am ready to see what we've got in action.

With Saturday being right around the corner, what are you guys looking forward to the most, other than the obvious, "PANTHER FOOTBALL, DEWD!"

Time to bend this season over and deliver our best effort

Would love nothing more than to deliver our "money shot" in New Orleans while Rivera, Chud, Smitty, Cam, and the "Prophet known as Kalil" hoist the Lombardi triumphantly in the air, for all doubters to behold... <EVIL LAUGH>

Correction:

Panthers release first depth chart of the preseason

SPARTANBURG

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers released their depth chart for the first time in the 2012 season and it held a few surprises.

First-round draft pick Luke Kuechly is not listed as a projected starter for Saturday's game against the Texans in Bank of America Stadium. Instead, the ACC's all-time leader in tackles is listed behind the eight-year veteran Thomas Davis at weakside linebacker.

Davis, who is recovering from a strained calf in the same leg on which he had three knee reconstructions, is listed as the starter. But Davis has not participated in pads with the team during training camp.

The lone rookie listed as a started is left guard Amini Silatolu, just ahead of the combo guard-center Jeff Byers.

In the secondary, Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn are projected to start and will be backed up by Darius Butler and R.J. Stanford. Charles Godfrey is listed in front of Jonathan Nelson at strong safety and Sherrod Martin is in front of newly acquired Haruki Nakamura at free safety.

Brandon LaFell holds the No. 2 WR position after having a solid training camp thus far. He and Steve Smith will be immediately backed up by Louis Murphy, David Gettis, Joe Adams and Armanti Edwards.

On special teams, 16-year veteran Olindo Mare gets the nod on the depth chart over Justin Medlock despite Medlock running with the first team at Tuesday's practice. Mare started last season, but Medlock has shown this training camp to have a longer leg.

Edwards and Kealoha Pilares look to be the main options for the return teams. Pilares is listed first and kickoff while Edwards is first on punt returns.

At the time of this post, the depth chart was not uploaded to the Panthers' official website.

Man, Hogan and Norman better get healthy. I don't think I can handle another year of Munnerlyn being our starting CB again.

Is it some rule that Carolina has to play 3-4 Ds in the preseason? I hate that. They spend all camp playing 4-3 looks in general and then go into preseason games where they face 3-4 Ds with no prep work.

    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
    • That is literally what I am talking about. Those were 53 man cuts. Not at the beginning of camp.  I would say the odds of Barno being back are extremely thin.
