Beason, sidelined with a hamstring issue, participated in the installation periods and walk-through Monday but is not as far along in his recovery as Davis. Beason ruptured his Achilles in Week 1 last season and had surgery the following week.

Beason said he hurt his hamstring overcompensating for his rebuilt Achilles, adding he would only play against the Jets if he is 100 percent.

Good to see he's being careful... Makes me not worry that he's trying to rush back

Merriman not a fit: Rivera, who was on Norv Turner’s staff in San Diego before the Panthers hired him, has brought in a bunch of former Chargers during his first two seasons in Charlotte. But he said the Panthers are not interested in ex-San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman, released Monday by Buffalo.

Merriman, the defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005 and a three-time Pro Bowler, has missed at least 11 games in three of the past four seasons. Rivera said Merriman is best suited as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

“Shawne’s really a 3-4 linebacker. And we’re predominantly a 4-3 defense,” Rivera said. “So I don’t see anything there.”

Not sure if this is more a knock on Merriman or that we're really gonna stay committed to the 4-3

• It’s looking more and more like the No. 3 receiver spot will be filled by committee. And with every passing day that David Gettis, who had ACL surgery last summer, remains on the sideline, Gettis looks like he might not be a part of that committee.

Nothing really ground breaking in the article, but it's something to talk about/speculate about on their day off.

If this wasn't posted by TCF, TCF would come in here Internet raging that this had already been posted and discussed in the thread directly below it, and would be berating the OP for not using the search function. I'm glad we all sidestepped that unpleasant landmine.

One thing that hasn't been discussed much is Ron's comment regarding WR's and using them in different packages.

Rather than relying on the same guy at #3 in all formations, it sounds like we plan to use all the active WR's on game day depending on Chud's game plan. That probably means that Murphy, Pilares, and maybe even Adams will all get touches throughout the year. Tutu may be included if he makes the team, but that seems uncertain right now. And of course Gettis, depending on his health.

This approach sounds a bit different than last year when it was almost always Smith, Naanee, and LaFell exclusively.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
