Haruki Nakamura #1 FS.

Not the problem. When Godfrey fugs up in run support it is usually due to improper angles. Yes of course he gets trucked every now and then, but everyone does. In today's NFL more FS and SS have that slender CB in order to keep up with the WR in this 4-5 wide sets everyone is going to.

Ok

You don't think the Panther FO wanted to make a statement after 2010? That is all I am saying. Not bc of the Godfrey move by itself...

I agree they wanted to make a statement. But I don't believe that statement consisted of signing players for the intent to impress.

I think its more far more logical to suggest that Hurney signed Godfrey because he ( for whatever reason) thought/thinks that he can improve and become a talented player. Not because he was trying to prove somthing. A move like that is irrational, and devoid of any integrity. Despite Hurneys mistakes, I think he deserves more credit then that

Regardless you and others are right, It obviously hasn't worked out so far.

I think part of the issue with Godfrey is that he's a thin cornerback trying to play SS. His body type doesn't suit that position. He has a slender build..compared to other SS in the league. Maybe that's why he can't tackle worth a damn

Check out examples:

Kam Chancellor

LaRon Landry

Brian Dawkins (retired?)

Adrian Wilson

Just a handful. I'd like to see us draft a big physical safety next offseason who lays lumber and doesn't get torched the way Godfrey has.

Damn, I am all aboard the concept of drafting a run stopping LB to play SS in this pass happy NFL! I know, we will be set when it trends back to a ground and pound game!

Saying Rivera came on board to build a team in his image and then said "Sure sign anyone you want, I don't have a say" is, well... strange.

You do not sign a coach to build you a winner. Then sign guys without his input.

Didn't say that.

Only said Rivera likely had very little to do with the contracts immediately following the 2010 season and before the 2011 season begun. He was a first year HC....and those extensions likely were being worked on before Rivera was even hired.

For the most part Hurney dumped big bucks on the type players anyone would want.

Sorry dude. Spin it any way you choose. Rivera was on board with Godfrey, or the offer would have been rescended.

See what I did there? I made my opinion sound like fact.

Godfrey would not have been extended without Rivera's backing. Whether Rivera was totally pleased with the decision is a different point. Hellz, who knows? There could be a reason Rivera wants Godfrey. The point being, your bias is showing on this one.

We have weddled (The wifes word. A cross between weeded and whittled.) our holes down considerably. So you are forced into nitpicking where to throw your displeasure. Zod I hope we can become a complete team before you drive me crazy.

What will it be next? Hurney letting Chud go? Cuz we all know, somehow, someway, it is all Hurney's fault. Right?

This was Hurney team before Rivera. It was Hurney fault we can't buy a FA. It is Hurney fault we have players who need to be gone. It is Hurney fault we are not quite elite. When does it end?

Hellz bellz. I bet even a Suber Bowl victory would not quiet your nitpickyness. We probably should have won by more. Our D let us down. And my Zod that O was atroscious.

Just ragging on you. Most times I leave you alone. Unfortunately. Not this one.

Oops, I forgot about that one. What the heck does that bolded part even mean? The type of players anyone would want? Does that mean we have players other teams want? Isn't that a good thing?

Well, to be honest. You did kinda discribe a LB when you asked for a big ol stud back there.

Is there any Davis type LB you have in mind? I hear that kid from USC is pretty damm good. Sorry, the wife is out of town, I have no one to throw my barbs at.

A 6'2 210- 6'3 220 is not linebacker haha

That's a big safety who punishes people

Kinda like Taylor Mays

True safeties 6'3" 220 are EXTREMELY rare. Especially as the NFL becomes more and more pass oriented. Most safeties that size have usually been liabilities in the passing game. *cough*Roy Williams*cough* Taylor Mays is one of those guys. He's big and he's fast, but he has no hip swivel and he can't cover.

Guys like Adrian Wilson and Sean Taylor (RIP) are the exception, not the rule.

So you want your S to be able to cover. So your S is about the size they are now. Good in coverage, less so in run support. As a rule.

Rudi wants his S to beat you up. So his size goes up. May be a liability in coverage, but will beast you at the drop of a hat.

Can't we have both?

But if it were up to me. I would go with Rudi's guy coach the hellz outta him. Protect him with schemes, and just do anything I could think of to keep him on the field.

I would love to have a S people actually feared.

Yeah, you can have both IF you luck into an athletic freak.

You don't have to be big to hit hard. Sure, it helps, but there have been many smaller guys who could lay people out. Mike Minter wasn't an especially big safety, but he could lay the wood with the best of them. Troy Polamalu being another.

When you start naming the best safeties of the modern era, for the most part they don't fit your mold. Most are in the 6' 200# range.

Ed Reed is 5'11" 200#

Troy Polamalu is 5'10" 207#

Brian Dawkins 6' 210#

The days of the old school head hunting safety are over. You gotta be able to cover to play safety effectively in today's NFL. Hell, the NFL has practically banned the old school head hunting style of play anyway.

You are correct sir. There is nothing in your post that I disagree with.

That said. We are talking two different things here. Rudi's S is rooted in fantasy. While your S's are all HOFers. Way to unbalance the scales by the way.

Teams are trying to get bigger corners and safeties. Why not take an athletic but undersized LB and experiment? Teams try strange things all the time. Ain't gonna happen. But that is only because I, or Rudi, are not in charge.
