What does a special teams coach actually do?

Haven't seen too much direct discussion of this MAJOR issue for the Panthers this year...

As I'm watching preseason games (namely the Houston and Pittsburgh games) I'm still seeing the special teams play poorly. Results have been mediocre to bad throughout the preseason.

My question is: How much blame does Brian Murphy deserve?

You'd think the coach would ultimately take responsibility for the seeming lack of preparation and focus. But...what does a special teams coach really do? Do they have a game plan? Do they have a scheme?

Why is our special teams so weak? THis goes back to the John Fox days and that loser he had in there for 3 or 4 years (name?) that he wouldn't fire.

Is it the players faults for not being in the right position on returns and coverage? How much can Brian Murphy control of this? I mean, he's not the one missing tackles. How much ownership can Rivera take of this problem?

Overall...why do we suck and whose fault is it?

Bad coaching is a big part of it, but a bad roster hurts too. The bottom third or so of our roster is awful. When you waste valuable roster spots on non-NFL caliber guys like Edwards and Clausen you have less room for special teams contributors.

finally someone hits the nail on the head. i guess i am not taking crazy pills after all!

Load of horseshit. The bottom feeders of your roster don't play Special Teams either unless there are injuries. The bulk of your special teams players are your second stringers. Keeping Clausen or Edwards has absolutely no bearing on being able to field an effective special teams unit. Teams don't keep 11 special teams aces on their roster. An effective special team requires quality players from all units.

    • LaMelo to Brooklyn for Nic Claxton, Drake Powell, and a pick.  Who says no?
    • Appreciate you, brother!  I know it was lengthy, but I felt whoever actually read it would appreciate it.
    • Damn good take, brother.  I think I take that poo personally because (sidebar: I don’t like to use narcissist often because social media has made it a buzzword and diluted the meaning, so when I use it, I don’t take it lightly) I grew up in a home with a raging narcissist, then married a narcissist and just came out of a divorce after a 20 year marriage with her, where afterwards she met and married another narcissist.🤣  And in my dealings with them, over my 41 years on this earth, at times I took great delight in breaking down their arguments point by point and forcing them to either acknowledge their wrongs and take ownership of them or watch them yammer and stammer away when they ran out of lies and excuses.  At various points, that was extremely satisfying, but ultimately, which I’ve realized especially after the last 3 years and going through the divorce and everything, it does NOTHING to them.  It doesn’t affect them one way or another.  For a logical, reasonable, grounded person, you would think calling them in their poo will bring it to their attention when they’re face when nothing but facts and truth and force them to change, but nope.  Not in the slightest.  They just disassociate from the ones who do that and find more people who will validate their behaviors and thinking.  poo pisses me off because they’re so destructive and couldn’t care less so long as their needs are met.
