#2 CB for Sunday

CRA

So correct me if I am wrong....

Sounds like Captain technically will be the #2 CB on Sunday. In nickel and dime formations Norman comes on the field and moves outside with Captain moving to the nickel....But Captain stays outside as the #2 CB in our base 4-3?

I guess that is there audition process for if Norman? Look good on the outside and he potentially can earn the on soon?

It's fairly simple. Coverages change in the nickel. Captain can get by with 3-over/3-under coverages. In the nickel though, you'd rather have Norman playing man, quarters, etc.

And you're basically right. I think it's about breaking Norman in slowly. Give him a limited role and keep it simple on him when he gets in on certain packages. If he shows out and proves himself, you give him more. Captain slips up and if Norman can play the boundary well, he will eventually earn the #2 spot.

Here's the big question:

Does the season depend on Norman coming along quickly?

I don't think we are depending on Norman for this year. I do think for where RR envisions the defense going it's imperative we solidify the CB position. I don't think even the most ardent Captain fan would say he is the answer at number #2 at this point. Also looking to the future how many more years does Gamble have in him?

That's my worry. However, if it DOES, you still don't push the issue. Don't want to ruin him by throwing him to the wolves. He'll have to face some good receivers in this season in the limited role he'll play. Don't want to throw potential pro-bowl caliber guys at him too soon. Sure, he faced Smitty all camp. Sure, he held his own for a young guy. However, we have to let his progression come naturally. Let him get the feel for what he's doing. I'm sure when he's in he'll be playing a hook zone, a quarter zone, or man and that's about it. Very simple stuff. Don't want him worrying about where he ends up in rolling coverage in the 4-3 and stuff like that (from what I can tell, we mix it up a lot as far as who plays robber in our 4-3 look).

There is no question, we absolutely are depending on him unless we bring in a vet after week 1.

And as to Captain, the guy just cannot play in space. When he can mug his guy in the first 5 yards, he at least has a chance, depending on how tight the refs call the game. On the outside, he is going to get abused and then abused some more.

We may be okay this week, as Freeman is still looking more like the 2011 version than the 2010 version, but if we have to leave Captain on the outside vs Brees, we're dead.

I think the season depends on the front 7 actually applying pressure this year....and not getting gashed on the ground. We can deal with weak # 2 CB play with pressure from the front, this O and pending the ST doesn't sabatoge things

No, of course not. Does any team's season depend on their #2 corner? Do you ever hear anyone say that New England or Pittsburgh's season depends on how their #2 corner plays? It's one piece, but it's not the only piece, and it's not even the most important.
