I wish somebody would get on this thread who had an opinion and was prepared to defend it. You know this is a forum. Dont be dismissive of a different opinion if you cant even articulate a point of view. This is to no one in particular. But hopefully it will bait a decent conversation.

I didn't read 90% of the posts in this thread but I'm pretty sure most are saying the same thing.

We played the Saints**. In other words, we played against the Pass. Duh, our run D was compromised.

This statement is in complete contradiction to the idea of a 4-3 defense. You should be successfull against the pass and run out of the 4-3 that is why it was created. This also explains our drafting strategy of speedy, skilled LB's.

My point is that without a 260+ guy to take on lead blocks we will continue to get gashed by down hill running (lead block) running.

Its not just the Panthers... missing tackles seems to be a pandemic in the NFL this season. Maybe players are more worried about making the ESPN highlight reel.

The bottom line is we were sending everyone on the blitz to pressure Brees. We were willing to give up the run to wind clock and were willing to give them yards to stop the pass. Defenses give up something every week. This week is was the run which surely didn't kill us. I frankly don't think it is a big deal and think the run defense is improved.

While I agree we are much improved from last year, I dont think it was as simple as clock management and a focus on the pass.

Whenever the blocker got to the second level he gained an additional 2 or more yards the safetys were making most of those tackles because the LB's were usually tied up by the guards and were getting pushed back. The only times this didn't happen was when we got penetration at the point of attack. That didn't happen alot.

We've only been gashed for long runs, about 4 times in the last two games, and Ron Edwards was out of the game each time. This guy seriously makes a difference.

This brings up a different point and the huddle seniority refuses to accept, lol. And that is Ron Rivera is changing us to a 3-4.

Ron Edwards has played exceptional in his role. He plugs the middle well and gets penetration on passing downs. But he plays like he is in the 3-4, usually taking the middle gaps. But this exposes our LB's who are small to medium sized 4-3 backers to lead blocks and they dont match up well to that. So if Edwards doesn't stop the run the saftey's have to because the LB's cant get through. Also what the hell is up with Charles Johnson dropping into coverage!!!! Not saying I don't like the 3-4 but as long as we are in this transition we are in jeapardy when it comes to down hill running. Look at the playoff teams or at least the ones we expect to be there this year mainly the 49er's, Ravens and Steelers. That looks like trouble to me.

I thought the run d up the middle was solid. Not great but solid. The big runs seemed to all come either to the outside or off tackle. I was pleased with the Edwards. The DEs and LBers were just too focused on the passing game and that allowed the big runs.

I know that people are not going to want to talk about it but I agree. Bottom line is that as much as I want to believe we it, we are not an elite team. Not even top ten and we really could be.

Its not just our run-D. Our entire defensive philosophy will keep us from crossing that threshold. We drafted Kuechly, I abhorred the pick and I still do. I got swamped on the Huddle for saying it but I stand by my original opinion which I voiced again a day or two ago on an earlier post. Our LB's, which have obviously been identified as the center of our defense, are all clones of each other. They are smallish, speedy guys with a lot of heart and skill. That sounds great right? But you see the result, huge downhill run gains.

Ray Lewis lost 15 pounds so he could cover more guys out the backfield, right? He did that because they drafted Melvin Ingram, who is a big run hole plugging LB who just so happens to be pretty good in blitzing. They also have Terrel Suggs, and Haloti Ngata. All of which are great against downhill running. Teams will continue to run down hill effectively because all the heart in the world wont allow a 235 pound LB to slow down 325 pound Guard with momentum.

Beason had 10 tackles last week, and two of those were TFL's, so our LB's will be just fine. I do agree with you about dropping DE's back into coverage though, and you have a good point about our 3-4 look, but we've never gotten gashed when in that formation.

The stats may not show it, but I think our run defense has done great, especially after the way the Bears ran all over us last year.

Lot of guys going for the strip in the first half rather than wrapping up. Wonder if we saw something in the film room on the way some of their guys handle the football.

Either way, better tackling need to be a focal point in practice this week.
