Grantland article on Hurney

So how would he explain why Hurney's team totally destroyed Reese's team to close out the Meadowlands in '09?

My point: using last nights game as an indictment of Hurney's ability as a GM is as silly as using the '09 game as an indictment of Reese's ability as a GM.

I agree with some of what's in the article, but he gets carried away.

Bc the emphasis is what Hurney has done in recent years....nothing carried away about that madness

I've always reserved my judgement on management of the team but that article put a lot into perspective about Hurney. Every single one of the contracts referenced in that article made me cringe.

The weird thing is that CJ's probably peevs me the most and shouldn't

Hurney has accumulated a team full of above average players that we are convinced are great.

He invested in vets with injury concerns (Davis, Beason, Delhomme, etc), a relatively unproven DE for beyond top dollar (that could be a 50 mil. contract), an unnecessary contract for D'lo (He shouldn't have been re-signed; gotta love him though) in the RB factory that is the NFL

This sums it up well:

As a result of all that largesse, the 6-10 Panthers entered this offseason nearly $10 million over the cap and unable to make any sort of foray into free agency. Holes at wide receiver and defensive tackle and depth issues on the offensive line and in the secondary weren't properly addressed, forcing the Panthers to bring in borderline rotation guys from other teams like Dwan Edwards and Haruki Nakamura to start. When the injuries inevitably show up, the players behind them are even weaker.

And we can probably cite a ton of things before the Cardinals game but that playoff game fallout should have been the turning point for this franchise. Instead, it ended up being Hurney trying to grasp on to all of his well drafted players & decent FA signings, meanwhile keeping Foxy and setting us up for failure consequentially spiraling into the dungeons of the NFL for over 2 f*cking years. Now we finally get a franchise QB and it puts a cloak over his sh*t...we hit a speed bump and the curtains are gone, we can see right through.

Above average talent disguised as greatness with the image of one player clouding the true make-up of the team. That's bullsh*t and not a dig at Cam.

He offers Delhomme's extension coming out of the '08 season as one of the examples of Hurney's incompetence... so our '09 curb stomping of the Giants is in play.

Because a onetime curb stomping is not as as good as a Superbowl Championship or two.

Not to mention, the coach that accomplished that is no longer employed here and while I was not a big fan of Fox's old school ways, he was not this team's main problem, Hurney was.

This is a very different team than 09 though Catman.

A lot HAS changed since then and he cites the draft failures and flubs that have taken place since then as well.

The problem with Hurney is, because of the intermittent success, he's been given passes way too often... 03, 05, 09... Then what. If you look at each year as an at-bat, Hurney has struck out so many times that he wouldn't even be playing in the farm system at this point - he'd be done.

    • I understand why people say things like it could be worse in relation to Tepper but it just doesn't jive for me. Are the optics bad? Yes. Would I want her to be the owner of my team? No. But I mean she's only been owner for a year and the Colts overall are a better run organization. As far as I know they've also never had the distinction of having the worst win percentage in all of professional sports either. Tepper has owned this team for 8 years and about the only thing that has been consistent has been the ability to continue to find different ways to achieve new lows. Even now people are saying things are different yada yada but we said these same things at certain points under Rhule Fitterer and Reich. I'm going to wait to see how the rubber meets the road this upcoming season before I make any strong conclusions about anything in relation to the longevity under this franchise going forward.
    • This is a toughie because I wonder what a guy like Canales thinks about redemption stories for addiction issues. Also, I think this is a case of 1 player getting caught, and not being naive enough to think this isn't more common in college than we think. I'd toss a 3rd rounder out there. 2026 is essentially a redshirt season regardless, so he's not taking over for any NFL QB next year. Best case, he's ready to go in 2027 if we pass on Bryce's extension. Worst case, he's our future backup QB2. Kid has the tools to be an NFL QB. I do think we could somehow land a '26 3rd round pick back in a trade. Our past years' third rounders are: Brazzell Princely Wallace DJ Johnson Matt Corral All this to say, I could see a team like the Jets going w/ a 2nd. They have three FRPs next year.
