Cutler, Newton's leadership under fire?

WFNZ just said that Mortenson has a leak that the panthers are bringing in a sports psychologist for Newton.

leak? how about rivera talking to the press saying that newton asked to talk to a "mind coach" himself and he's going through the team to do it. some leak.

i think i could be a leak for mort. just pay attention to team pressers and then "leak" that info to him.

The towel is a rediculous thing to keep harping on. It's on, win or lose... good or bad. Why do they think it's some sort of eccentricity that needs to pulled down like the Berlin Wall? Media is latching on to whatever they can to make a point, which is not an unusual thing for them. Anything to sensationalize what they want to portray... it's one of the main reasons I despise all "media" types.

Honestly, I'd be pissed if Cam started yelling at receivers on the sidelines. These are adult men, not little kids. He should be able to talk to them, open and honest, and get them all on the same page. Yelling to them is fine... that's trying to rile them up and rally your team. Yelling at them though... that's frickin' childish.

Now with that said, he can show more on the sidelines, and for God's sake, someone work with him on doing pressers after games. The last one was just completely awkward to watch, and at the end, he just left the podium abruptly. At minimum, he should be thanking them at the close. That's just good PR, and it will only hurt his image further if he walks off. I could tell he was just upset, and about to lose it, but then again, adults get through until they have some time to sit and think alone. In that aspect, I agree, it's time for Cam to grow up. It was almost as bad as Vontae on Hard Knocks... "I wanna call my Granma."

If he wants to shed this maligned image, he needs to take the steps to present himself as a mature adult QB who leads this team. With time and practice, I think he will. But he has to want to first.

ummm...cutler's leadership and pouting has been questioned for years.

newton's new and he can grow out of it. i will say this, though....he's absolutely NOT fine. he's a work in progress in the whole growing up department. he's seeking out help with the whole mind coach thing which is 1) admitting that he has a problem (something apparently some who have posted in here are ignoring/oblivious to) and 2) a HUGE step in the right direction.

i think most everything he's facing is just a maturity issue. he's got to get his emotions under control and learn to turn disappointments and failures into opportunity and motivation and he also HAS to understand the impact that his persona, good or bad, has on others and work to make it as positive as possible.

I don't understand why people seem so threatened by the fact that our young QB has a flaw that he can work on.

I was very pro-Newton during the pre-draft process and I still love the man. I know that his talent and potential are limitless and I think that he's an upstanding young man. However, admitting that his sideline demeanor is lacking and that he's not showing ideal leadership qualities is not something to be scared of. It's the truth and it's fairly obvious to anyone who isn't intentionally allowing themselves to be blinded to the facts.

I have 100% faith that he can resolve and grow out of these issues. I believe that he's handling the process the right way by acknowledging the issue and being proactive about getting help dealing with it. If Cam admits that it's a problem then no one else should have a problem admitting that it exists.

Now people saying that Cam will never fix this issue, or that we are doomed to failure or some such nonsense....fug those people. But there is nothing wrong with discussing the issue in general, because it IS real.

just repeating what I heard bro

FTR: a "mind coach" and "sports psychologist" are two entirely different things.

not in this case. it's essentially a therapist...probably a sports therapist and many pro athletes use them. mort is just making it out to be more of a big deal than it is while rivera in his presser was trying to downplay it by calling it a "mind coach" but it's all the same thing and it isn't that big of a deal because so many use it.

The Panthers have been a disappointment so far and their last game was an embarrassment for the entire NFL since they failed to compete on primetime in their own stadium.

Teams and players are criticized after poor performances. Get used to it. Nobody here was upset with all the attention Cam got as a rookie and as a draft pick. When the performances aren't what people expect he'll be criticized just as much. You take the good with the bad.

thanks doctor phil

I agree w/ the part about Mort making it out more than what it is though. If Tom Brady was doing it we wouldn't hear about it.

    • It's worth noting that we started playing something that looked like football after going down 17-0 against the Dolphins.  Up to that point we had rushed the ball 3 times and Bryce had two turnovers.   Then we ran it 5 straight times with Rico and he started cracking off some big gains and led to our first touchdown.  Another 37 yards of rushing later, Bryce goes 1 yard complete, incomplete, incomplete to get that field goal before halftime.  Then we committed big time to the run in the second half and played some really nice complimentary football.  The Panthers had stumbled on a formula, and it started with Rico being crazy productive.  Something they only learned because Chubba was injured and Bryce started that game so poorly they were forced to lean on Rico. Fast foward to Dallas, they essentially lean into the same game plan against the Cowboys and I think everyone was surprised by how quickly it started to look complimentary.  In my opinion the productive offense really helped the defense as well.  We played quite solid against a top offense. Finally we make our way to the Jets and Bills, Chubba's return.  You can't say the low scoring affair and return to ineffective football against the Jets was all on Chubba, they were indeed a better defense and so was Buffalo.  But the production difference between the two backs in both games was both visually and statistically obvious.  The bigger picture is the offense took a major step back as well.  They are other moving parts and it's isn't all one thing, BY9>Dalton by a decent margin at this point.   But yeah, Rico's vision and athleticism is just better than Chubba and it jumps at you.
    • First day in 3 weeks my pain started to dwindle just a tiny bit.  Got switched from hydrocodone to post-shingles pain patches.  My insurance refused to pay for my patches as I’m too young for shingles per them.  I also need a prescription to get shingles shot and insurance also won’t pay for it even thought I just had shingles and in high risk to get it again.
