Interesting Rivera News

Brooklyn Bully

I would have hated to see what old Tom had to say about the NYG when he first got there. If what has been said is true our players are a bunch of baby's that are waiting for JR to save them.

The other day I posted that it seemed the organization had leaned towards "players coaches" as opposed to guys like Coughlin or Shiano. Capers prided himself on attention to detail, but he was by no means a hard ass. Seifert was just aloof (neither hard nor soft), Fox was a players coach, and until this report, I would have classified Rivera as a players coach as well.

JR, as a former player may lean towards that type coach either intentionally or unintentionally. Perhaps it has created a culture that focuses more on everyone getting along and not rocking the boat more than on pure performance. It seems Kris Jenkins may have been an example of a poor fit with that type culture.

I don't pretend to have the answers, but if the culture is "soft" we will never progress sufficiently to be a consistent winner. That doesn't mean we have to hire a Coughlin clone, but it may mean we need to make a conscious effort to shake things up.

The difference was, the Giants' players weren't spoiled like ours are.

I beg to differ. Coughlin's first year was really dicey, with guys like Strahan resisting the changes. Once the players realized Coughlin was there to stay, they eventually bought in, but plenty of people speculated Coughlin wouldn't survive his first year in NY.

It's hard to hear the message when your 1-4, and it's hard not to cuss out your team when your 1-4... but watch (with take the chance of jinxing the Panthers) as we pull out 5 straight victories off the bye week and then every player will love Rivera and his message. Just part of football.

Nope, i remember watching a video on Panthers website last season, that Panthers insider bit Mike Craft does every week and it showed a clip of Rivera getting in the face BIG time during a clip. I mean, scary stuff, yelling. Not typcal stuff you see.

I take pride in thinking I can read and assess personalities. I always thought he was like the teacher mentor coach that treated his players like men and gave "I'm disappointed in you" speeches when players didn't perform. Shows what I know.

If anyone can find a link to this please post.

    • Well, as far as backups go, Kyle Allen is actually a decent one.  Better at this point than Dalton probably. That being said, Hooker apparently had an atrocious game against the Texans.
    • i wouldn't say that yet. I also wouldn't say he's done anything that makes me think he's particularly good. i think that's about right for compensation both ways for thielen considering the state of the vikings and Panthers.  The weirdest thing is that technically the panthers should be adding veteran salary cap right now; they have a high cost first overall qb on a rookie contract; that's the best advantage in the NFL in this day and age. It hasn't worked out because, well, the qb they drafted isn't good and they've ignored other parts of the team to try to bolster him.  so what's morgan really supposed to do? Are they tanking with a rookie qb in year three that the owner probably personally wanted drafted? Are they actually trying to win games this year with 80 career catches between their top three receivers? The defense is probably going to be terrible. What kind of jump are people actually expecting from Coker, Bryce, XL, and performance from a rookie to overcome that? It's not realistic.  At the end of the day I don't think Thielen wanted to end his career here and I don't blame him. Minnesota is going to compete this year and Carolina isn't. I also think this is to toss Bryce to the wolves and be done with him one way or another. There's no way this works. This is not a move you make if you're trying to win football games.
    • If he helps them win a super bowl the individual award is irrelevant.
