Brian Xanders

Mike Klis writes that the Panthers should look into hiring Brian Xanders to replace Marty Hurney as general manager. Xanders was the former general manager in Denver, and Carolina pursuing him would make sense if the Panthers want someone with previous experience who can start immediately. The Panthers have been very tight lipped about how they plan to proceed, but the one thing I’ve heard is they have their eye on at least one guy that currently works for another team and has not been a general manager before. If the Panthers want to talk to that guy, NFL rules say they have to wait until after the season. But they can talk immediately to Xanders or anyone else that is not currently employed by an NFL team.

'' Xanders had worked 14 years in a variety of capacities with the Atlanta Falcons before he was hired to become the Broncos'' assistant general manager by then-coach-football operations boss Mike Shanahan after the draft of 2008.

Xanders, 41, was promoted to general manager the next year by then-coach-football operations boss Josh McDaniels, a position Xanders held until Monday.

Although the Broncos' 2009 draft bombed, the McDaniels-Xanders' regime had only 3½ months to prepare. The Broncos'' drafts in 2010 and 2011 were among the league's best. Starters produced from the 2010 draft were Demaryius Thomas, The Golden Calf of Bristol, Zane Beadles, Eric Decker, J.D. Walton and Perrish Cox. In 2011, Von Miller became the NFL defensive rookie of the year and Orlando Franklin was a 16-game starter. Safeties Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter were also starters."

It seems, when Elway came in, he wanted GM control, and decided to let Xanders go. The people in the denver chat really seemed to like this guy as well.

His list of draft choices (minus The Golden Calf of Bristol) is pretty impressive.

Also, I was going to post this last night but because it's speculative I didn't think it was worth its own thread, so I didn't know where else it could go... But, here you go:

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4679344/should-angelo-get-chance-as-carolina-gm

If the Carolina Panthers go out-of-house to hire a new general manager, a case can be made that former Bears boss Jerry Angelo should be included in the list of qualified candidates to replace the recently fired Marty Hurney.

With Angelo at the helm from 2001-2011, the Bears won 95 regular-season games, four division titles and earned a berth in Super Bowl XLI. While there were certainly draft-related issues that should not be ignored or overlooked, Angelo was responsible for the selections of Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Matt Forte, Devin Hester and Henry Melton, not to mention the free agent signings of Julius Peppers, Tim Jennings, Thomas Jones, John Tait, Ruben Brown, Robbie Gould and Roberto Garza, plus the trade that brought Jay Cutler to Chicago from Denver in 2009.

Angelo also hired Lovie Smith who appears on the verge of inking his third contract extension in the offseason and is already one of the most successful head coaches in team franchise history.

In regards to the current situation in Carolina, Angelo worked with current Panthers head coach Ron Rivera for three seasons when Rivera served as Smith's defensive coordinator from 2004-2006. Whenever a new general manager walks into a situation where he has a pre-existing relationship with the head coach, it tends to put the entire building at ease and place the focus squarely on the business of winning football games, not on worrying about who's going to get fired.

Angelo also thought highly enough to bring Carolina offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski in for an interview for the vacant Bears OC job in 2010 that ultimately went to Mike Martz.

He did make a mistake trading tight end Greg Olsen away to the Panthers, but Angelo clearly values Olsen's talent, otherwise the Bears wouldn't have selected him in the first round in 2007.

Certainly, Angelo's resume isn't without blemishes. The 2007 draft that yielded Olsen turned out to be a disaster when high picks Dan Bazuin and Michael Okwo flopped. Then there was the release last week of 2008 first-round choice Chris Williams who never panned out the way the Bears envisioned. Same with Cedric Benson in 2005. Free agent signings Brandon Manumaleuna, Marion Barber, Sam Hurd and Roy Williams were also suspect to say the least.

And it is fair to wonder if he'd be the right guy in Carolina since the Panthers are searching for a way to build the offense around quarterback Cam Newton, and offense, as we know in Chicago, isn't Angelo's strong suit.

But to simply brush off Angelo as a viable candidate would be a mistake. He did some good things in Chicago. People who have done much less in the NFL have received second chances.

Why shouldn't Angelo?

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
