If a head coach and OC use an offensive set that seems to be getting bad results, what conclusion do you draw from its continued use?

1. Coaching staff are morons

2. We just want to learn new offensive schemes

3. We are incapable of competently running other schemes

Most hear choose #1 and think Chud and Riveras only reasons for running the read option is that they are mentally impaired.

What say you?

Number three. I dont think cam is working hard enough on under center footwork. Plus a boot leg would seem to be extremely effective with him. Problem is he CANNOT throw that well on the run, so play action boots wont work. I think the main issue is our backs and oline dont compliment this system they tried to put in to cater to Cam. They need to stop babying him and get in his ass. Its not like they treat cam special in that regard though its the whole team. Ive never seen rivera chew him out on the sidelines for boneheaded plays. rivera makes no one accountable for their play during games. Dumb penalties stupid decisions need to be critized right then and there.

Stubborn, hoping for a break through that makes them look like a genius. No one wants to admit when they are wrong, so it took a job being lost to force their hand. Had Hurney not been fired, you would see the read option for the rest of the year.

When the NFL stands for Not For Long as far as coaching, you are telling me that Rivera and Chud can run many schemes, but stick with the read option (and losing) just because they are stubborn and have many other and perceivably better schemes they could run and win with?

Pretty fatalistic choice for a coaching staff, don't you think?

So you give us three crappy options then argue against them?

I say #4. It did work. They thought they could improve it. When you have a singular talent at QB like Cam. It is only human to try and think of unique ways to use him.

You may be right, but I can't remember seeing him do it enough to make a decision either way. He had some nice ones last year, including a 40+ yarder to Smith, but then we all remember the one to Hartsock recently.

I'd like to see more attempts before we just decide he can't do it.

Could be #2, some reason they feel what worked for Cam in college would work in the NFL. If given the time, this would have been squashed last season.

Most likely #1

BREAKING NEWS ALERT.....deception based offenses will not succeed in the NFL....

      This is where I'm at. Dowdle is a feel good story and glad he's proving his doubters wrong. I just don't see how we keep our OL intact (which is the right move) and spend on another RB after giving Chuba his money. Though the odds are against him, I do think Brooks can still be our RB2 next year..and if he stays healthy, our longterm RB1. Having the full offseason with no pressure to try and come back like last year will help. I'm also happy to see he and TD have been connecting.  If this team is smart, they go into next year with Chuba/Brooks/ETN and sign a Dowdle-light version in FA at minimum cost. Chuba is in his prime and a full offseason to fully recharge will only benefit him more. Dowdle is unfortunately a luxury item I don't think we can spend our money on. We still have other areas of need that we have to improve on the defensive side of the ball.

      last time they loaded the box, shut down the run and forced BY9 to beat them, we saw the result of that. So what can we do this time to beat them? I suspect it's going to require a lot of short / intermediate passes with TE play to help

      Floyd Mayweather Jr. made hundreds of millions off realizing this. He was an exciting boxer in his early days but watching his dad and uncle struggle with the effects of taking thousands of punches to the head he realized he was skilled enough to good guys without putting himself at risk and he'd just wait for other elite guys to lose a step before facing them. The whole WWE-esque "Money" persona was built around the realization that it doesn't matter if they're watching to see you win or watching hoping you'll lose, all that matters is that they're watching. Force them to love you or hate you, just make sure they care enough to tune in. We had a similar situation with Cam. Everyone felt some kinda way about Cam. You couldn't find many NFL fans who were neutral on Cam Newton. Is was love or hate but either way it was must see TV.
