PFF's midseason All-NFC South team

Offense

Quarterback: Matt Ryan (ATL)

There was a time when this position was owned by Drew Brees. Instead Ryan, our Mid-Season All-Pro, gets the nod thanks to his fantastic start to the season.

Running Back: Doug Martin (TB)

As much as Pierre Thomas is the highest graded back from the division, with just 58 carries it was impossible to give him the call here. Instead, the rapidly-improving Martin gets it, and that bodes well for the future of the Bucs.

Tight End: Greg Olsen (CAR) and Tony Gonzalez (ATL)

There is no fullback for this team because of the play of these two tight ends. Gonzalez has slowed down in recent weeks but still has the third-most yards of any tight end. Olsen is one of the few success stories in Carolina, though his performances recently have been a far cry from his Week 4 masterpiece.

Wide Receivers: Roddy White (ATL) and Vincent Jackson (TB)

Julio Jones may get more attention, but it’s Roddy White who is toe-tapping his way to another fantastic season. Meanwhile, Jackson has delivered instantly on his big deal with some fine performances, even as he plays through injury.

Tackles: Jordan Gross (CAR) and Zach Strief (NO)

While Donald Penn has played well, he can’t outdo the consistency of Gross, who is our 10th-ranked left tackle on the year. The right tackle spot was Tyson Clabo’s to lose, but that beatdown Charles Johnson put him still lingers. So Strief gets the nod.

Guards: Carl Nicks (TB) and Jahri Evans (NO)

We reunite Nicks and Evans, though this will be the last team the Bucs’ left guard makes this year after he was put on injured reserve. He was earning his contract up until that point, in the same way Evans was delivering on his.

Center: Todd McClure (ATL)

The veteran center is still getting the job done after all these years, even if he can be something of a liability (for a center) in pass protection.

Defense

Defensive Ends: John Abraham (ATL) and Charles Johnson (CAR)

Tough on Michael Bennett to miss out, but he’s tailed off after a hot start whereas Johnson and Abraham have feasted on tackles (for the most part). They’ve managed a combined 60 quarterback disruptions.

Defensive Tackle: Gerald McCoy (TB) and Vance Walker (ATL)

McCoy, who was a starter for our Mid-Season All-Pros, was a lock with his performance earning the second-highest grade of all 4-3 defensive tackles. Walker has been impressive as part of the Falcons’ rotation, showing a knack for making plays as others struggle with scheme changes.

Linebackers: Lavonte David (TB), Luke Kuechly (CAR) and Thomas Davis (CAR)

The two rookies started off slow but appear to be getting better and better with every game. The fact that Davis is able to play is a miracle in and of itself, but that he’s not looked out of place in doing so is a testament to the man. There’s been a lot to like about Sean Weatherspoon, but he can at times get caught out of position in the run game, and that’s why he misses out.

Cornerbacks: Asante Samuel (ATL) and Aqib Talib (TB)

Talib may be something of a head case, but his talent is undeniable. He’s been tested and has given up a lot of yards, but he’s also made a lot of plays against some very good receivers. Samuel still doesn’t know how to tackle, but his knack for making plays hasn’t gone away.

Safeties: Ronde Barber (TB) and William Moore (ATL)

After a disastrous last year at cornerback, things are certainly looking better for Barber at safety. He misses too many tackles still, as does his partner in this team, William Moore. The Falcon safety, though, has the ability to make game-changing plays and that’s valuable.

Special Teams

Kicker: Connor Barth

Punter: Thomas Morstead

Returner: Jacquizz Rodgers

Special Teamer: Courtney Roby

I don't know anything about Vance Walker, but Dwan has had a huge impact since his arrival.

Also, despite a lack of competition on the division it's good to see Gross recognized as some think he sucks now.

A little surprised not to see Smith listed.

I don't think TD has a prayer of winning the CPOY outright, but it's great seeing him back out there.

It has not been highly publicised, but Cameron Newton was named the team's 4th string, emergency quarterback...

LOL...logging out, back to beer, boobs and chicken wings...

and watching Chip Kelly's Oregon defense get exposed on national television

I talked to TD on twitter and told him that he should be cpoy hands down. He said he appreciated it but knows he's not as popular as manning so he won't win it. Him and his wife both replied and are amazing people. It's bullshit that manning is gonna win it so easily. TD is coming off of 3 surgically repaired ACL tears on the same leg, and no one has ever done that before, let alone played at the level he is playing this year.

    • A lot of people have been slobbing all over this last draft but I hate the way that Fitterer/Morgan have built this offense since drafting Bryce. Anyone with eyes knew our IOL was crap but we didn't invest there and instead took project receivers and an injured RB. If you want a lesson in how build for your QB wrong, IMO, this was it. Draft him, protect him, THEN get him weapons. Its pretty much a rule, draft interior linemen, pay tackles. We're paying everyone. We had the opportunity to draft a center instead of Brooks, or perhaps instead of trading up for XL, trade back and take 2 guards/center. We could have paid Lewis and still drafted 2, but Hunt at 100m was just an overpay. And it's not like the guys many of us were begging us to draft were long shots. They're solid starters from day 1. Injuries happen. That's why all your starters can't be high value players. You need rookie contracts mixed in to be able to absorb those inevitable losses on the line. An offensive line playing an entire season together is an abnormality.  Factor into that also paying Moton 44m this offseason with a huge signing bonus when we didnt need to do right now to do him a "solid".  Now we have to sign Icky and possibly Bryce and it's a mess with more money tied up in the offense, inevitable cuts and dead cap coming. That's not even factoring in shifting Corbett to C last year after major injury to start at a position he's never played for an NFL season. It's all stuff that was foreseeable and pretty easily avoided.  The $$ and picks we've spent trying to surround Bryce outside of Tmac (Mitchell and Horn are TBD) have been used inefficiently IMO. Smarter drafting and FA with the line could have let us get more reliable weapons than XL and Sanders in FA. It might not be popular opinion, but I'll take a Bersin with hands that can get 6-8 85% of the time vs a big play XL with greasy fingers.  The part about hitting guys in stride was more about placement, which Bryce has struggled with. Obviously not every route is run to be hit in stride, but they do need to have the ball placed well to give the receivers a chance to do something after the catch. I just used Hill as an example because he's the biggest YAC threat I could think of over the past 5 years.   Receivers can feast on dink and dunk if it's schemed right. But to make it work, that vertical threat has to be there, if not the deep pass then the high speed routes that can spring someone for the huge YAC to keep the safeties from cheating into that 20 yard box all game.  I hope DC and Bryce can keep up what they did in the last game and it isnt just an Atlanta thing. But no matter what, I really want to see some better long term strategy coming from the FO.
    • Eh. Don't speak it into existence lol. We've got enough on our plate just trying to overcome the bad juju of what has been our historically bad perfomances more often than not in primetime over the course of 30 years. We're overdue for a statement primetime game!
    • Passing chart had 3 over 20 I think. The Legette TD and another completion and an incompletion. All over 20 yards.  An incompletion at 19 or maybe 20 yards. So you could technically probably say 4 throws 20 or more.     That seems high to me compared to the norm. 45 throws and 10 YPA are both way high.
