I am right, most of YOU are wrong...and the zone read is STILL a Red Herring

Because the answer isn't as simple as people want to think it is. I'm not saying that the zone read isn't an issue and it is reliable enough, just that people are refusing to even consider that it's not the only problem and that we have had success this year using - moreso than standard running plays.

agreed.

it's a whole slew of problems going on. play calling has been huge, but so has poor execution and stupid mistakes by the players....ALL of them.

no one gets off the hook. losing every week has very much been a team effort and much of the time it's only been one mistake too many at the wrong time that if avoided would have been the difference between a W and a L.

The read option, I am convinced CAN work in the NFL, but you need someone who is more familiar with it than a guy who appears to have studied it for one offseason and then tried to install it as a base offense.

There is a lot of nuances that make it effective that Chud doesn't seem to understand.

i think he has a great playbook and is incredibly intelligent as an OC. i think he's one of the youngest and most creative minds in the league...BUT his playcalling has been far too focused on one aspect.

i think he used the 80/20 rule and applied it to his playcalling. he saw that 20% of his playbook was resulting in 80% of the team's successes (or could...i don't know) so he decided to do what worked 20% of the time 80% of the time.

not sure if i've had enough coffee this morning yet for that to make sense...

at any rate, he got stuck in a rut the size of jeff davidson.

the problem is that he's been predictable in his playcalling except for the one trick play a game he had been doing. when davidson was here, i could understand being in a rut when your playbook is all of about 5 pages written in crayon, but with chud, it's just mystifying. his playbook is ginormous and but he only uses a small portion of it.

I don't think anyone is saying that the zone-read is the only problem of our team, it's one of many problems.

First and foremost, coaching is terrible. The ability to make adjustments doesn't exist. We have a horrible center/right guard combinations, a rookie left guard, Jordan Gross is getting old, the zone-read sucks, our special teams are not very good, and we have a rookie corner starting and a guy who is 4'7.

Those are our problems.

the zone read doesnt work because, A) Chud built this team as a pass first team. The offensive line cant create any holes for the rb nor cam. C) It forces Cam to carry too much of the work load D)Ruuning the read option too much takes the wr's out of the game. E) Unless you are playing against carolina, running the same play over and over does not work in the NFL. :)

Chud built this team?

Thanx to nonesuchapanther for posting a link to the Charlotte Observer.

i posted that link to kill the misconception that deangelo williams is so much better rushing out of traditional formations.

the read option is crap. it's feast or famine. it's average is skewed by the massive runs (mainly from newton) that it produces every once in a while.

D-Will is getting 5 yards a pop out of the zone read....That is very good....he is a RB...

Stew is getting 4 yards a carry out of the zone read....that is average, not brutal....he is a running back....

I believe the zone read is a poor choice as a base NFL offense like most of you....but it is NOT the cause of the majority of the team's offensive problems.

That is why the staff does not want to "drop it" completely...the play can be very effective...and it has been very effective in spots for this team....

When you are completing 50% of your passes on second down....

When you are completing 49% of your passes on third down...

Your are not going to move the ball consistantly down the field in the NFL...

THAT is the main reason Carolina is 7th in average yards per play, 20th in total offense and 28th in scoring offense

Carolina has been just brutal in obvious passing situations...

This is NOT entirely Newton's fault.

Be his inconsistant play has contributed and contributed mightly...

from what I've seen on Sundays.. the read option fake is the problem. Cam's eyes aren't on the field for a good 2 seconds before he can even read the defense.

You can make all the pre-snap reads in the world, but you also have to read a defense at the snap of the ball, which is even more important.
