Panther fans expectations for Everette Brown

Saint J

Recommended Posts

Brown is going to be a good situational pass rusher who should pick up the pressure when Peppers gets double teamed. If we are able to shorten the time we are able to get to the QB with the Brown signing then we should improve drastically from last years defense. I think not enough people are talking about our possibly bigger problem and Richard Marshall being a full time number two. From what I saw of him last year he miss read a lot routes and would somehow leave people wide open. He should improve under this scheme hopefully and Sherrod Martin is good insurance.

I expect that barring injury to a starter, Brown will not play much or do much this year. He has better skills than many coming out of college but typically rookies don't have the foot or hand skills to excel right away and often are abused for at least the first half of the season.

Just like all of the saint fans were slobbing all over Sed Ellis last year talking about how he would come in and dominate right away, Panther fans think the same about Brown. He will develop into a good player and may get some play on third down to spell the starters. But if he is our leading sacker this year we are in a world of hurt.

well Freeney is a similar size, and was also under Meeks and he had a huge rookie season; 13 sacks with only 8 starts

i would put brown closer to mathis height and weight wise over freeney...charles johnson is closer to freeney and is said to be pound for pound the strongest guy on the team..plus lots of scouts have said browns size is almost maxed out

i hope he's good enough to start coming out of the gate and would love for that to be the case. i'm not expecting it but i am expecting him to be used pretty heavily, especially on passing downs.

he may not be starting at the beginning of the season but i wouldn't be surprised to see him starting towards the end.

all this is under the assumption that peppers is back next year which is probably a safe bet. if he isn't then most likely brown will be starting if not from day one then soon thereafter.

expectations, though? pretty high. 8-10 sacks i don't think would be outrageous.

Did I say anything about Malcolm Jenkins? This thread is about Brown, keep on topic.

I think Brown will struggle for playing time for at least this year. Peppers barring a trade has a starting job locked up, Brayton came on really well at the end of last year, and Johnson is solid as usual. It will be hard to crack that rotation consistently outside of obvious pass rushing situations.

That should make for an interesting TC battle between the DEs, should be fun to read about this summer. Even though I'm a rival fan I enjoy coming on here in July/August and reading about the Panthers traning camp.

I don't think he was trying to be a smartass about Jenkins.....but i could be wrong. It is a similar question and situation between the two teams.

Carolina needs and expects big things out of Brown this season.....jsut as the Saints need and expect big things out of Jenkins.

You are a very knowlegable poster...and I am interested in your take on jenkins as a rookie for the upcoming season.

You've come to the wrong place if you're in search of consensus.
not true.

more of an impact than brayton? maybe. i'm pretty confident he could and will. more than peppers, though? i would say he would provide more constant pressure than peppers (high non-stop motor vs. peppers) but not have as much as an impact than him.

Ok, I'll give it a shot...

I think Jenkins will see the field a lot this year mainly because of his versatility. Gregg Williams has been quoted multiple times as saying he's drooling at the thought of all the things he can do with Jenkins who can play safety or corner. Jenkins is physical and has great ball skills, something our secondary lacks, and I think that's what will get him on the field. He'll have quite a battle in TC with Porter, Sharper, Harper, Gay, Greer, Young, etc. all battling for playing time. When he sees the field I don't expect anything stellar out of him yet, just solid play.

Our secondary actually looks pretty solid this year, lots of youth in there for the 1st time in a while...

huh? I didn't make any argument about the topic, I was just stating that consensus is rarely reached on any topic at the Huddle.

Find me a thread where the various members of this board have reached consensus on a topic. And no that topic can not be about the merits of boobs.

    • I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.
    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
