Peyton Manning vs. Panthers Corners

It’s been quite a while since Peyton Manning threw those three interceptions in Atlanta, and questions regarding his ability to throw the ball have quickly evaporated. Maybe his arm strength isn’t all there yet, but he’s learned to deal with that — only twice this season has he had a QB rating below 105. His recent games have contributed heavily to his league-leading QB rating of 108.5. Though Manning leads the league in accuracy percentage on balls thrown over 20 yards in the air, he is also tied for the league lead with four interceptions on such throws.

With starting corner Chris Gamble lost to IR weeks ago, the responsibility of covering the opposition’s wideouts has been left to Josh Norman and Captain Munnerlyn. Norman has started every game this year for the Panthers and has performed admirably for a rookie drafted in the fifth round. The 35 receptions he’s given up are tied for 14th-most among cornerbacks, but he’s been making quarterbacks work for it — the longest reception he’s surrendered this year was a 29-yarder in Week 2. Munnerlyn has been solid on the outside, but he really shines in nickel packages when he moves into the slot. When covering the slot receiver, he gives up a reception once in every 14.7 plays, tops among corners with at least 100 coverage snaps in the slot. Forced into significant playing time for the first time in Week 5, nickel corner Josh Thomas has done well, allowing just 48 yards on the 13 balls thrown his way.

conventional wisdom says arguably the goat will carve them up this sunday, but i am REALLY excited to see what the secondary will do against peyton manning this sunday.

i haven't been this excited about a game in a long time!!!

I think having rookies for corners helps us out more because peyton is so methodical that he will try and find patterns in their play, but it will end up back firing due to the rookies being rookies and still kind of unconventional the way they cover. If we can get a good rush from the front 4, we should be able to at least slow peyton down.

the CBs need to give their receivers NO cusion at all. no soft zone.

when you have a QB that is a master of getting rid of the ball in 2 seconds and controls the game by going 5-7 yards a play...you can't play soft or give the any room at all. any cushion you give is going to turn into yards. every other cushion is going to result in a first down.

surely these guys and these coaches know this. trying to contain will only get you pushed backwards here. the secondary has to make it very uncomfortable to get the ball or get open and they have to buy the Dline another second to get back to peyton.

when you have a QB that is a master of getting rid of the ball in 2 seconds and controls the game by going 5-7 yards a play...you can't play soft or give the any room at all. any cushion you give is going to turn into yards. every other cushion is going to result in a first down.

Well im sure we will be in a lot of nickel packages, so i would assume that we would play heads up.

The corners are part of the equation but I feel the pressure our DL can bring is just as important..

Our offense needs to keep Payton off the field with sustained drives. Payton cannot carve anyone up if he is not on the field.

Teams cannot stop Payton but the key is to contain him and limit his time to throw coupled with keeping him off the field.

      You could say that-- but if we don't need a starting OT this year, why would you draft a flawed one that is not going to play? (We are coming from different underlying assumptions and perspectives--I see your argument and don't disagree with the premise) Your thinking is based on the assumption that an OT for the future is more important than immediate needs at other positions, or that we can meet other needs in later rounds even if we take the OT in round 1.  I do not think there is but 1 OT worthy of a first-round grade---they are mocked based on need and demand--if we do not have a need for a starter right now, a team at 18 may grab a T that is the 33rd best player--worth it if you have no starting T, but not if you have a starter.  So just because they are mocked around the middle of the first it does not mean that the players are good values--teams get desperate.  QBs are a great example.  Simpson may be worth it in round 1 for the Cardinals, but not the Jets, because they have Geno Smith.  Sure, they will need a QB by next year, but taking Simpson is a reach. I do not see our need, with 2 starters (Walker and Moton) and another possibly returning by the end of the season enough to justify ranking OT over positions like Safety, Will LB--I do not think we replaced A Shawn Robinson (We gonna put a NT out there?  Wharton (280lbs)?  So do we reach in round 1 for a player who may not play much or do we get a Will LB that can cover?  A deep free safety?  A quality center? A playmaking TE?  A DT to replace Robinson?  A wide receiver to balance the secondary?  Long term, if the right player was there, you would be right.  Short term, OT is a luxury at this point, in my view.

      We arent switching. Evero is 3-4 to the core. Given how 3-4 has been a noticeable characteristic of top defenses recently and we have drafted and signed players fir it  I dont know why anyone would think that's a good idea
