How far will Hester's athleticism take him?

Article I wrote on Devin Hester and his role as a Wide Receiver. What are your thoughts? Do you think with time he can become a solid WR for the Bears? He definitely has shown progress considering he barely played WR in college outside of "reverses" and "gadget plays".

Feedback is appreciated :)

I think a big part of this equation that wasn't mentioned (Unless I missed it) is Jay Cutler. Cutler should be feeding Hester this year like Kirstie Alley at a buffet table. I could be wrong but I think Hester will shine this year and be a legit #1 or close to it. He has the talent.

My take on Hester?

He might become a decent #2, perhaps a slot receiver, but he does not possess the instincts of a true #1.

Athletic ability alone does not a #1 make.

IMO the Bears took a once in a lifetime talent at KR and PR and made him in to a mediocre WR, out of necessity, since they could not draft a WR and chose not to go that route in FA.

Hester is a bit challenged in the thinking aspect of football, which I believe is shown by his amazing instincts returning the football.

Once he is required to read and react and otherwise play the team game, he often fails. Witness his failures in college at both WR and DB.

Witness the same sort of failings at the pro level.

The flashes he shows are based completely on his physical gifts, not any understanding of where he needs to be. Also, you often see him getting hit in the head with the football, overrunning plays, getting caught on the jam, etc.

It makes me sad to think that an extraordinary talent in one phase of the game has been sacrificed for another phase, a result of poor planning by the higher-ups.

Just my opinion.

IMO he could be a servicable option....but he probaly wont run routes well but can get open downfield on fly routes. its up to the coaches to use him to his strengths and cover his weaknesses....if they use him as a gadget player thats all he will be

IMO, he is similar to Reggie Bush has great athleticism but not easy to find the perfect uses for him....

IMO, it's impossible to judge him upon 1 season as a full time NFL WR. As to the contention of his failures at WR/DB in college.... I mean, come on, if the guy is getting flip-flopped from WR to DB to KR and back again, how is he supposed to develop as anything? Given that he is and has been practicing at WR for over the past year and through camps, I don't think it's unheard of to see further development from his this season. Time will tell. It should also help to have a stud QB throwing to him and not the constant flip-flop at QB.

Just call me the Yin to Epi's Yan :D

    • I think they took him for that.  He projected to fit the role we saw in Tampa and Seattle.  But Bryce doesn’t throw those balls.   Bryce basically throws to the sideline or endzone…..not really ever putting them up and in play between the 20s.
    • Honestly, it wasn't on him last game. There are many other reasons that come before Bryce. Dave Canales is really starting to worry me. I mean there are glaring issues that can't be excused. I said back when the whole Rico/Chubba thing happened. I said right then that you cannot have a coach that handled those 4 or 5 games the way he did. I get it, most thought that he was trying to throw games, which was not wrong thinking because of how bad it was. The decisions right before half. The strict "Chubba gets this drive and Rico gets the next." It's seeming like a lot of our backups are the better talent, so he cant evaluate talent. Not calling a quarterback sneak because of size. Small quarterback have a different type of advantage, just not as good as a large quarterback, but still doable. Then he doesn't even explain why he didn't put Dalton in there (saying it would give away a quarterback sneak is...just stop). I honestly think he forgot about putting in Dalton. There are so many others that I'd have to re-watch the games to remember.  I could make a whole other post on that defensive game plan...absolutely awful. And a quick petition...see the quote above, can we please ban these weirdos and try to clean this place up. This is peak reddit right here and these losers will destroy the board. I couldn't make it though 3 pages because these morons post more than anyone else. These are the perpetual online freaking weirdos banned from getting too close to schools reddit mod types. Get these losers out of here. You got these freaks posting a ton and not answering the question OP posted ABOUT THE PANTHERS. This is supposed to be about football and this dork constantly tries to attack OP's question. Could you imagine someone in your real life group acting like this? You'd kick his butt out immediately. And you have this reddit loser trying to stop people for posting about the Panthers. Any normal person would just skip the post, but you have to remember these morons base their whole personality on their online persona. They would be banned almost everywhere else. Send him back to reddit, they will be a cancer to this place, trust me. I guarantee you he has more comments than 95% of accounts. These guys are the lowest in society so they live online. Its everything to them. You dont want that. Just read his responses. Do background check on that guy, there are younger people on this too and he probably isn't allowed to be talking to them, or be on here at all.
    • Neither of them are getting in. Cam had HOF potential but was squandered by Ron, Shula, and Gettlemen.
