Newton's Sophomore Slump - another look

CRA

Recommended Posts

2011

4,051 passing yards, 60 % comp, 21 passing TDs, 17 INTs

706 rushing yards, 14 rush TDs

2012 (on pace for as of today)

3, 963 passing yards, 58% comp, 19 passing TDs, 12 INTs

787 rushing yards, 8 TDs rush TDs

So, he is on pace for....88 less passing yards (with 37 less pass attempts), 81 more rushing yards (with 2 more carries), 5 less INTs, a 2 % lower comp %, 2 less passing TDs (again 37 less pass attempts)

AND on pace for better yards per pass, yards per carry, and a better passer rating.

That isn't a slump. That just isn't the expected/hyped improvement.

That projection is also with his slow start bringing it all down.....if he continues as he has in recent weeks to finish, he walks away this year with a simply better individual 2nd season.

Also, if he keeps up his play like he has in recent weeks, we probably finish 7-9.

Not much better, but a game improvement.

Yea, that sophomore slump talk was crazy. He's improved this season. His turnovers are down this year, and thats what the major complaint about him last year was. I'd like to see him get that completion % back up into the 60's, but he's had a really good season. We get a better team built around him, and this team will go some places.

Exactly. I can see Cam throwing 6 more TDs, rushing for 2 more, and throwing 2 more picks. He will have more total yards this year than last year...

Do the haters on here realize Cam could very well account for 5000 yards and 30+ tds...

The expectations on this kid is unreal...

Here's how I look at it....

He was an all-world super human stud last year. Something the league hasn't quite seen before. This year, although he's arrived at it in a different route; he's still exactly that. Something other-worldly in the way of a football player and QB. He's a superstar. And I wouldn't say he's slumped or disappointed or not improved. For him to match last year's stats and put this dumpster fire of a team and coach on his back every week is saying something. He's been just as good if he hasn't been better. And just as good as last year is something super human.

    • That makes me wonder, how many starting tackles in the NFL and/or elite tackles have short arms? I feel like there’s probably lots of tackles that end up being drafted in later rounds because they had short arms or didn’t have the physical tools.
    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
