Sheldon Richardson "Under Tackle"

A lot of people have mentioned that they didn't really like the idea of taking Sheldon Richardson because he's an Under Tackle and not a Nose Tackle. I think that he'll be a great pickup in the Draft and having Richardson and Dwan starting if we decided to part way with Ron, that our run D will still be very good. Teams like Tennessee, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Seattle, St. Louis, Detroit, Philly, Jacksonville, and Atlanta all run "two UTs".

When looking at these teams who run with two UTs, there's some bad but theres actually more goods.

The Bad:

-Philly is just an overall bad Defense

-New Orleans is just a bad team with a bad off-season to start their season with an Asst. Head Coach. Previous years have shown that NO have been pretty good stopping the run, just not this season.

-Jacksonville is Jacksonville

The Good:

-Tampa is no.1 in stopping the run with averaging 83.3yds/G only

-Seattle is at no.10

-St.Louis has an upcoming Defense and is in the middle of the pack at no.16 in stopping the run

-Detroit at no.18

-Atlanta, just look how well they're playing

Im fine with taking Richardson and I would love it. I think some people are just too carried away thinking that our "Run Defense" would crumple down if we decides to take Richardson just bc hes not a NT. Teams have proved that they can stop the run with no true NT. So dont stress on it guys.

The only one that helps your argument is Seattle. St. Louis has Brockers, who I wanted us to take last year to be our NT. He's a monster and definitely a run stopper. Detroit has Suh, who's not an UT, and they're still in the bottom half. Atlanta doesn't exactly have a good run defense. If their stats say otherwise I'd have to guess it's because teams tend to pass more to keep up with their offense. Tampa Bay has Roy Miller, not an UT.

Tennessee's defense has sucked since they lost their NT Haynesworth. NO's defense has sucked since when Sam Mills played for them. Their run d has been especially bad. And Philly, even when they had a good overall defense they weren't very strong against the run.

Simple math says if we have a 300 lbs D. Edwards and a 295ish Sheldon Richardson we're going to get run on. When you're giving up that much size and strength the other team is going to gets the push. Richardson looks like he'll get pushed around in the NFL. Do not want.

I'm not even saying we absolutely have to have a 325+ lbs DT but we do need someone who's going to be able to take on 2 blockers and not get blown back, whether it's a bigger guy like Brockers or Kris Jenkins or a guy that's just strong enough to take two on like Suh or the Seattle guys.

I don't care whether he's UT or NT if he is good. Plenty of UT's command double teams, Dwan Edwards was an example.

More importantly for me their ability to A: hold the point and B: collapse the pocket. We have a very good LB corps so if they're not having to blitz all the time to generate pressure or having to get off blocks from OL at the second level then it doesn't matter who you plug in there.

Also, strength is far more important that the dudes size. From a physics standpoint you want a heavier guy, but I prefer the guy with outstanding low body strength, knows how to anchor and uses good technique with footwork, handfighting and such. Hardy is a good example, while he's got the weight to play inside he has the power, technique and speed/quickness to win inside.

I know nothing about Richardson, I just know we need some promising youth at the DT spot. I like Kearse and Neblett, Dwan isn't young, Ron is old and landed on IR two seasons in a row and as far as I'm concerned Fua is still a wasted roster spot.

All the teams I listed above doesnt have none of the player you listed as a NT on their Depth Chart. Dont just go assuming based on their height and weight that they're a NT and not an UT. Brockers is simply an UT due to his athletic abilities and quickness off the snap. With his physically gifted size, he's able to command double team and stuff the run so most of the time it look like he's a NT.

Suh and Roy arent no NT either. You gotta be kidding me. All Suh does is bull rush and create penetration through olinemen. You cant tell me that a person with 20.5 sacks in three season is a NT and not an UT. Nick Fairley has a better chance of being a NT than Suh.

How do you know that Richardson will get push around in the NFL? Are you just assuming that just because of looking at his size? Geno Atkins is way smaller than Richardson and that man hold his ground damn well. Fua looks to part but that guy cant hold no damn ground as of yet. Gotta see the man first because thinking that he'll get push around in the NFL.

UnderSizedTackle. I'm pretty sure that 295 is a major stretch, more like 280. The guys motor is top shelf, but I have a hard time imagining him holding up to a NFL lineman double team.

Im sure that with NFL trainers, Richardson wont have a hard time gaining 10-15 more pounds. Every rookies come out smaller than once they leave the NFL. Cant be stressing about Richardson weighing 295 or 280.

Completely agree with everything you said.

I dont get how Jawny is thinking that Suh or Brockers and even Roy are NT. They're simply UTs who can hold the point and collapse the pocket like you said above.

Geno Atkins is another guy that is smaller but has great lower body strength.

    • Ironic that out of all of the multiple players listed, you zeroed in on Bryce Young and only Bryce Young. No mention of Derrick Brown or Jaycee Horn... Hell, we can even add Icky to the mix but sure... let's laser-focus on Bryce. That's a hell of a mirror for you to run into. 👀 I'm not sure what "wisdom" you think you're imparting to the front office beyond the idea that the being Panthers means that they're destined to suck forever. That doesn't exactly sound like wisdom as much as it sounds like the same relentless doompilling you've been committed to. But sure, let's pretend it's "rational" to condemn a pick after limited rookie action and an injury setback (and that anything less than full-blown pessimism is bootlicking). That's certainly the lighthouse we all need in the storm that you insist is eternal... at least until you and only you, decide it's not. Unlike you, I'm not asking anyone to leave. I'll just keep showing up with facts and context. You're more than welcome to keep showing up with doom and gloom.
    • So you don’t think with his weight down /position more similar to what it was in 2023 he’s capable of 10+sacks? I don’t watch college football so just going off the write ups, like getting the opinions from folks who do
    • I'm excited for Scourton. Even if the sack numbers aren't there right away, he'll contribute and has a certain floor IMO. Would be thrilled if he can turn into a Charles Johnson-type contributor one day. Never a star (though, please do), but reliable and damn good at what he does.
