Superbowl HCs (first 2 yrs)

CRA

Recommended Posts

Oh, doom and gloom....Rivera hasn't made us a Superbowl contender in 2 seasons so he is now poo. Lets look at what the few winners did as they started growing as HCs (record after their first 2 yrs as HC)

A look at the last 15 rings handed out. In the last 15 years only 11 HCs can claim they are Superbowl winners.

2011 - Coughlin - 13-19

2010 - McCarthy - 21-11 (team was 12-20 the 2 years prior)

2009 - Payton - 17-15 (team was 11-21 the two years prior)

2008 - Tomlin- 22-10 Superbowl (team was 19-13 the 2 years prior)

2007 - Coughlin - 13-19

2006 - Dungy -16-16

2005 - Cowher - 18-12 (team was 16-16 2 years prior)

2004 - Belichick 13-19

2003 - Belichick - 13-19

2002 - Gruden- 16-16

2001 - Belichick - 13-19

2000- Billick - 20-12 - Superbowl (team was 12-19 two years prior)

1999- Vermiel - 9-19

1998 - Shannahan - 8-12 (fired)

1997 - Shanahan - 8-12 (fired)

Out of the last 11 Superbowl winning HCs (last 15 seasons) only 5 won more games than they lost 2 years in to their head coaching careers during the regular season.

Now Ron.

13-19 (team was 10-22 the two years prior).

All I am saying is Rome wasn't built in a day. We don't fully know Ron's big picture potential. He deserves one more year to show his development. Sure, there are exceptions....sometimes a coach like Brian Billick will take over a team that was losing and wins Superbowl in two years. But Brian Billick isn't a reason to fire Rivera. Only other coach to win it in 2 years in recent history was a essentially a turn key operation in Mike Tomlin.

Now, can someone please make a Ron Rivera I Got This gif?

The 2-14 year he stepped in afterwards, the lock-out situation, and a rookie QB are huge factors, IMO....Not excuses, but impacting factors...

Rivera came into a situation where he shouldn't have won more than 3 games, but since he won 6 people wanted 12 the next year. Give people an inch, they want a mile. Logic leaves the building too early for many people.

I believe Ron is a good coach who the players respect, however Chud is a dumbass who's playcalling is extremely unpredictable.

I believe that a lot of our faults can be placed on him, look at the way he calls second half games. All those fuging three and outs.

All those coaches are no where as bad a decision maker and game adjustment as Chico

You say that, but you are looking at many and comparing the decisions they made once they developed into HCs vs. a green Ron.

You think Belichick, Shanahan, Vermiel, etc were viewed as great HCs 2 years in? or bumbling fools that wouldn't pan out?

CRA, what's the success/fail ratio for coaches who started off their careers with two losing season?

Well, you would have to give me a time period and a more specific group of HCs....but I don't need to look up the stats to tell you most regardless of what criteria looked at don't win rings. Too many teams and only 1 prize.

That's because this team is a 12 win team today. We left 5 games on the table this year.

And Rivera made obvious coaching blunders.

I've been hoping he gets one more year just because I think he has great potential but I hope he is on the shortest leash in 2013.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
