I agree that I'd like to see the line solidified, but I can't agree that Gross is, or ever has been the issue... Restructure him, extend him, or just leave him alone to finish out his contract, but replacing him simply takes a cog that is working, and replaces it with another piece that may, or may not work...

We need to draft lt and rg this offseason. Then bell needs to be replaced next year.

If we move some of his salary to signing bonus we just end up moving the problem to next year when things are going to be tight as well.

At what point can we bring in someone much younger as a free agent for what we save on releasing him which as a June 1st could could be 8 or 9 million a year who can be a lynchpin for the next 6 or 7 years instead of having Gross hang on for 1 or 2 years at the most and still needing to replace him. I suspect that is what will be going through Gettleman's head.

It's not uncommon for linemen end up playing effectively, well into their late 30's... Particularly those who didn't have to deal with an increased number of injuries earlier in their careers... Gross has 2 years remaining on his current deal, which puts him at 35 the summer he is a FA... Ideally, given his durability, he could play to 36-37 before retiring... Extending him now would lessen his 12M cap figure for this year, and allow the team to more evenly dispurse his salary over the next 3-4 seasons, as opposed to taking huge hits this year and next, even if we release him... At the same time, given the depth of offensive tackles in the upcoming drafts, the team would be wise to bring in someone who could potentially start at RT for a year or two, with an eye towards moving them to LT once the decision has been made that the position needs a change...

This could effectively take Gross' guaranteed money, and spread it into a manageable amount, while at the same time keeping an eye towards the future...

The thing that's going to make this a real b!tch is we have to somehow clear off that $16 million (less this year's carryover) in March, before we see who we get in the draft and long before the benefit of any June 1st cuts. That's what makes guy like Gross and Gamble so vulnerable, because DWill or Beason, for example, can't really be moved before June 1st.

He's probably going to have to do more re-structuring than he likes. In any case, it will be interesting to watch this play out.

People throw around the word restructure as if it's some kind of magic wand. We have to pay these guys the money we owe them, all restructuring does is move when we have to pay to a different date. Backloading the contracts will only put us in worse cap hell when we have to re-sign Cam.
