List of buttholes that hit pucker factor 10 during Gettleman's presser

Gross has been durable (has missed 9 games for his career, 7 of those in 2009), and consistent... This season he had 3 penalties, and gave up 6 sacks... Not too bad given the overall situation...

I agree that I'd like to see the line solidified, but I can't agree that Gross is, or ever has been the issue... Restructure him, extend him, or just leave him alone to finish out his contract, but replacing him simply takes a cog that is working, and replaces it with another piece that may, or may not work...

Great plan. Make the right side worse to fix the left. Bell cant play rg, he honestly shouldn't be a starting rt either. Anyone know who played rt when dwill and stew went off for 2,200 yards?

We need to draft lt and rg this offseason. Then bell needs to be replaced next year.

Travele Wharton? What do I win?

The issue is not that he was the problem at all, the issue is like Gettleman said in his presser, does the player's performance still justify the price tag. Is Gross worth 11.7 million this year or not? Does extending him make sense when he is 33 in July? What is there really to restructure?

If we move some of his salary to signing bonus we just end up moving the problem to next year when things are going to be tight as well.

At what point can we bring in someone much younger as a free agent for what we save on releasing him which as a June 1st could could be 8 or 9 million a year who can be a lynchpin for the next 6 or 7 years instead of having Gross hang on for 1 or 2 years at the most and still needing to replace him. I suspect that is what will be going through Gettleman's head.

It's not uncommon for linemen end up playing effectively, well into their late 30's... Particularly those who didn't have to deal with an increased number of injuries earlier in their careers... Gross has 2 years remaining on his current deal, which puts him at 35 the summer he is a FA... Ideally, given his durability, he could play to 36-37 before retiring... Extending him now would lessen his 12M cap figure for this year, and allow the team to more evenly dispurse his salary over the next 3-4 seasons, as opposed to taking huge hits this year and next, even if we release him... At the same time, given the depth of offensive tackles in the upcoming drafts, the team would be wise to bring in someone who could potentially start at RT for a year or two, with an eye towards moving them to LT once the decision has been made that the position needs a change...

This could effectively take Gross' guaranteed money, and spread it into a manageable amount, while at the same time keeping an eye towards the future...

I do agree with you that Gross' performance does not justify a 12M salary, but few players do justify that... I also agree that it is entirely possible he could be released... I just feel like that creates an issue for us to resolve, that wasn't there before...

There are reasons to support keeping him for a year or two or letting him go. I can't see us keeping him at 11.7 million. I am glad I am not the GM having to wrestle with all these issues. Then again Gettleman seemed pretty thrilled to get the job and appears to be confident he can work things out. As a Panther fan I am behind him and hope he gets us back to a winning franchise.

The thing that's going to make this a real b!tch is we have to somehow clear off that $16 million (less this year's carryover) in March, before we see who we get in the draft and long before the benefit of any June 1st cuts. That's what makes guy like Gross and Gamble so vulnerable, because DWill or Beason, for example, can't really be moved before June 1st.

He's probably going to have to do more re-structuring than he likes. In any case, it will be interesting to watch this play out.

People throw around the word restructure as if it's some kind of magic wand. We have to pay these guys the money we owe them, all restructuring does is move when we have to pay to a different date. Backloading the contracts will only put us in worse cap hell when we have to re-sign Cam.

    • I would say that seems like an odd comment from Morgan, but at the same time it's almost impossible to find a college QB declaring for the draft to have less physical ability than BY so you can assume almost anyone you bring in would be your go to QB sneak/designed run guy.
    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
