Before I start, let me put this out there. Whenever the moniker 'great' is put in front of someone's name they always feel compel to give answers to questions they have no answer to.

I was watching FirstTake and the topic was how to stop the read-option. They were talking about Bill Parcells describing how to stop it. His solution was 'hit the QB on every play' whether he keeps the ball or not. That's his solution, people! Now all he needs to do is apply for a patent. Now, we can go on and cut Cam since he's a read-option QB and start Clauson. Seatle, 49ers and Redskins should follow suit and start their backups. Nothing to see here and we can all move on.

As an everage layman without the moniker great beside my name, what if the QB is running a play-action pass? Because the play-action pass is very similar to the read-option(or play-action run)? Are you gonna give up 15 yards penalty on every down just to make sure you cover all the basis on defense?

What parcells doeesn't understand, since he is been out of the game for a while, is that if you hit any player that's not actively involve in the play, that's a 15 yards penalty and a letter from the league. That's why RG3 started showing his hand after he gives the ball to show he is not involve in the play.

Plus the only way you can hit the QB on every play is to assign one player just for him on both side of the line of scrimmage. For you to do that you'd need to blitz on every down. Did I mention those QBs are pure passers as well? I don't think Parcells cover that part.

What people still don't understand is the read-option is the same play as the play-action. Only difference is the QB runs it instead of passing. Once the play-action is 'figured out' then you can also stop the read-option.

Well, at least Parcells is patenting how to stop the read-option and NOT the read-option, play-action, running back, wide receivers all at once. Just because you stop the read option doesn't mean the QB can't throw for 650 yards & 6 TD. So, buyers beware. Lol

I get where Parcells is coming from. I watched as Navy ran for 300 yards in one half against ECU this past season. I was screaming "Just hit the quarterback!" throughout the half as they killed us with the triple option.

Parcells isn't saying to draw a ton of personal fouls on purpose. He's saying that if the QB is going to pretend to have the ball then you put a lick on him, just like you would the RB if he pretended to have the ball.

if you hit the qb on every play, as the game progresses...guess who isn't going to have the ball more times than not.

what you're doing is forcing the qb to get rid of the ball. it takes the guess work out of who is going to have it.

He means on read option runs. First guy hits the QB no matter what he thinks the QB will do. This automatically turns the read option into 1 option- RB. If the ends go after the QB no matter what the QB will dish the ball or take a loss/ small gain.

Parcells is right. Obviously, if it's a fake run, you have to pull up and not hit the QB. But if you direct the D (usually the DE) to play the QB on all apparent read options, it can be effective.

I forget which game we played early this year (maybe the Giants?) in which they did exactly what Parcells was talking about.

We practiced against that defense every week up until that game too, to prepare. and we get blown out.
