First Draft Podcast-Kiper/McShay Discuss picks 11-15

I don't want to be put in a category like that. I love Austin I think he is a great play maker for a team that uses a slot WR a lot. But I don't think this team is moving in that direction. Plus I think it's crazy to draft a player thinking he will become 89. Again people I could see another Megatron type player coming along before another Steve Smith. I've never seen a player like him before.

I never said I thought he would become another Steve Smith. I simply countered your assertion that the limits of his capabilities are already written in stone before he is even drafted or plays a down in the NFL.

I think now when drafting a player in the 1st or 2nd round. It's not just about what a player can be potentially it's what they can do day 1. With this team we need 2 starters out of our 1st 2 picks.

We won't take a DT in the first (at least at pick #14) and here is why:

-1st round DTs that aren't top 5 can't miss guys (Suh, McCoy, Darius) have absurdly high bust rates.

-We have Ron Rivera and Gettleman, both of which are very good at digging through other team's trash and finding capable guys for cheap. We will get a guy or two late in FA or after pre-season cuts, and they will surprise us.

-Young super talented DT does not fit into our future. We are going to be investing huge money into Keek, Hardy and CJ for the next decade.

-It's not as big a need as we think it is. Dwan will NEVER repeat his 6 sack season, he got that from teams overplanning for our DE combo. Also you need to remember on passing downs we usually bring Hardy inside. All we need is a guy for running downs to control his gap.

Trends and comments from the team this offseason most certainly dictate that we're looking to take a WR high.

Honestly I think Gettleman's ideal scenario is to move down roughly 7 or 8 spots, garner a 3rd, and take a WR with the first pick, but putting that into play will be tricky.

Either way, that certainly appears to be where our interest lies.

I don't expect anyone to be beating our door down to move up. Not with this draft class.

Probably not beating down the door, but we have a much better shot than guys picking in the top 10. This will be a good draft, there just aren't many studs in the top 10.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
