So whatever happened to Johnathan Hankins?

Recommended Posts

He was everyone's draft darling a couple months ago and a darling of mock experts like Mcshay, but lately we havent heard a peep about him. Has his stock fallen? Did he have a bad pro day/combine? Did he have a injury surface or something? Kind of odd he was almost on all mock drafts of us taking him and now, nothing. He is more of nose tackle, run stuffing DT and we need that more than the undertackle Sheldon Richardson type if we address D line at all.

Nothing really. No bad workouts, he's just not one of the media's golden boys. Doesn't have a sob story like Floyd to make him a better story. He's still my 2nd favorite DT in this class and would be happy if we took him at 14. Perfect for a 4-3 NT, big enough to plug the middle but still quick and agile enough to make plays in space (unlike the Georgia boys). Long arms, strong, quick off the snap, reads plays well, motor is above average (not great, but above average). Would be a perfect fit here.

Yea, he would make a perfect fit for a run stuffing 4-3 NT, rather him than Richardson

And another one. The second play in the video, he takes on 2 or 3 blockers and doesn't budge, stuffing the play. The third play, he puts on the pressure that leads to an interception and then has the hustle to throw the block that lets the DB score the TD.

Big JON Hankins is still one of my favorite prospect and my no.2/3 best DT.

(1) Star

(2) Floyd/Hankins

(3) Sheldon

He's exactly the player we need also. A true big body NT. He's more than a run stuffer. Hankins is a better interior pass rusher than Star and a better sideline to sideline tackler. Has some quickness to make tackles across the field. Only question is his physical condition.

Yep, and Hankins was on board that train until he underwhelmed at the combine. Big Hank has been carrying a big red flag since high school and he hasn't given scouts any confidence that his work ethic has improved.

He didn't overwhelmed at the combine. He had a so so combine like most of the other DTs. In a wonderful world, teams do questions his work ethic and he falls right to our lap at 44.

Hankins is a soft body. He is not overly athletic and is not a mammoth for a nose tackle. The bigger guys like Jenkins and Williams are going to get picked before him because of size, Brandon Williams may even go before him because he is that bigger coveted guy and has a great work ethic. Either way we can get a nose tackle at 44, I hope that it ends up being Jesse Williams and if not Hankins will do just fine.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
