Who's been to New Orleans?

Went down in '09.  Aside from the Saints fans, love the atmosphere.  Definitely a unique place with a unique vibe unlike anywhere else.  I recommend that you don't go driving out at night and just walk around the French Quarter and take it all in.

Also, look out for rats the size of house cats and don't wear white shoes - you'll ruin them.

There's a reason the population of New Orleans has decreased by 30% over the past 10 years.

There's a reason the state of Louisiana, once home to at least 9 Forbes top 50 businesses, now has but one.

There's a reason Saints owner, Tom Benson, still gets a check from the state of Louisiana to keep the team in town.

Sure, there are the nice restaurants and some neat places to visit... but what large city doesn't have all that? I can find very good quality privately owned restaurants in Charlotte or Raleigh or any other major city.

The state of Louisiana depends on the tourist dollar as its major source of revenue. And since 2005 (Katrina), New Orleans has nothing but Bourbon Street to offer.

Reality... and I went to NO long before the Panthers existed... is the place is a shithole. By far one of the nastiest big cities I've ever visited, and I've been to most all over the country.

I've never been to NO and don't plan to. What I've seen from the airport is enough for me. If I want the old southern city vibe, Savannah or Charleston are just fine for me. And no stench either.

I'm staying in the French Quarter at the Chateau Lemoyne ie. the Holiday Inn.  I hear there are plenty of places within walking distance from there.

This trip was originally for a bachelor's party, but the wedding was called off about a month ago!  So it's now just turning into a big throwdown/birthday party...my bday is this coming Sunday so I'm sure we will celebrate that Saturday night.

that's where we stayed as well.  great people that worked there, at least when we went.  great location!

Yeah, I had never walked through a city and ended up with a black sludge on my shoes that would never come off...  Until I went to New Orleans.

That being said, the music and general feel there in the French Quarter at night was awesome and unlike anywhere else.

So I'm flying out of Charlotte tomorrow night for NOLA.  Let me know if your buddy has any tips on where to get some good grub.  It'll probably be a large group of dudes that have been drinking, so nothing too fancy.

Reading through this thread and lots of good advice.  I'm looking forward to wearing my Panthers t-shirt around town.  Wish me luck.

I hit up my guy and am waiting to hear back from him.  Keeping in mind that he is a chef in NOLA that means it might take a day or two to get back to me. Not because he is that busy mind you, but rather because as a professional chef in NOLA that also means you are a professional drinker.  He will have to sober up long enough to log in and respond.

And ignore all of the haters.  New Orleans is a fantastic city with a ton of things to offer both in regards to food, culture, history, and yes partying.  Its been my experience that most of the people who talk poo are the folks who have never seen anything more than the airport, the highway from the airport to the quarter, and then the quarter.  Like any city NO has much more depth and flavor that that roughly half a square mile.

don't mean to spam the thread, but here was a video I took right by the hotel CK...  This was just impromptu, these guys showed up and started playing their music and some homeless dudes just started dancing in the middle of the street like it was nothing.

I have some other videos from walking down Bourbon and they had some open-air bars with people playing music there as well, it was amazing.

Been there once for a Panthers game. The superdome is POO. It was the Saints superbowl year...dammit, 1st or 2nd play from scrimmage was a 70yd TD from DeAngelo. I think everyone was fumbling....DW's fumble was returned for TD.

Anyway....downtown/FQ is dirty, Wife and I ate at Deanies (BBQ shrimp.....was soo good, felt my arteries cloggin up at the restaurant. The shrimp sit in some butter&spices sauce....no idea how to make it). Bought some sauce to bring home, but I hear they don't allow that anymore.

You can always jump on the street cars to ride thru NO. I could definitely live in the Tulane area.
