City is running out of options in effort to tie Panthers to Charlotte

31 other NFL cities disagree

Not so long as they employee economists.

Stadium subsidies are always money losers, even more so when you consider opportunity costs.

Now if you want to make some argument about civic pride or what not, different story. Financially you're pretty much taking $200 million and flushing it down the toilet.

Why can't Charlotte agree to pay the money and divide it over several years. The Panthers pay it upfront through an interest free loan from BOA as their part of keeping their name on the stadium and the city pays them back over 5 years.

Hell I don't know but there has to be a solution......

Are we going to lose our team?

Short term no. But with the 15 year tether being taken off the table, all bets are off once team is sold. Based on public comments, JR wants this team to stay here. His attempts to get the city and state to have a financial stake in the game serves two purposes; it saves him money (obviously) but it also sets up obstacles for a new owner to pull out of Charlotte. The city and state buying in would make it hard for a new owner to up and move and the original deal would have built up a reseve for a new stadium if needed 15-20 years down the road. All that has changed now because of NC's position on the matter. A new owner is going to want things to increase revenue. It will cost + $1 Billion to buy this team. A new owner will not spend a billion to buy and then millions more for projects to upgrade revenue streams. He will ask the city and state for money. Money that will be twice what JR is asking for today. A pissing match will ensue between the city/state and the new owner. It is then that we will see just how serious the new owner is about moving the team. The unknown is JR's lifespan and whether or not he sells before he passes.

So hopefully we can vote out these Republican buffoons the next election and get some reasonable legislators who value the Panthers and allow Charlotte to do what they need to do to keep the Panthers before JR dies.

BTW, what happened to the republican motto of allowing local government to make decisions instead of big brother. They harp in Washington about letting states make decisions and keeping big government from making all the decisions. Yet on the state level they want to control what Charlotte wants to do. If they kept the same philosophy, they would allow local governments to make decisions for themselves and get out of the way. Does the Federal government stop states from taxing what they want. No..... Then why should the state stop local governments from doing the same thing. The old classic double standard.........

Good question. I'm a life long republican that has lost faith in the party. Republicans used to be for small government that does not interfere where it's not needed. There is very little difference between Republican and Democrat anymore besides the Republicans outdated stance on social issues.

What is Richardsons share, 51%? He has investors....will they sell too?

Who ever comes in will buy out his shares. It aint $1B

That's the unknown. Do they al cash out in the sale? Is a current shareholder a potential buyer? The scenario I bring up obviously takes place in a vacuum assuming team being sold means all share holders cash out.

Wow, we are getting a brand new stadium with our public money for the same price you guys are getting "upgrades". And our public money is actually coming from you guys as well, so we appreciate that.

What do you mean by this ?

All Richardson has to do is sell enough of his shares to his local investors to give them a majority hold. Then we have a group of local investors that own a majority share.

Do you buy a billion dollar franchise because you want to make yearly revenue (I dont think so)or do you buy it because in 20 years it could be worth $2Billion.

Besides if you are in this to make money there are better ways to make money then investing a billion dollars in a football team.

The public money that is being used to help with the Falcons new stadium will come from the Atlanta Hotel tax. So the way I like to look at it is all Panthers, Bucs, and Saints fans that stay in Atlanta will be helping finance our new stadium.
