Which helps more?

I'm going with the former star if he is as good as advertised would

Help eliminate double teams on Johnson and Hardy not to mention keeping our speed at LB clean to make plays, even the best cover men can't cover more than 5 seconds in today's nfl.

I honestly think a stud DT would help us a lot more than a stud DB. A DL that can apply quick and constant pressure can force bad throws, picks, etc more than a DB keeping 1, at most 2, guys covered can lead to coverage sacks. There's always another option or a check down if the QB has time. If the OL is keeping the QB safe, a QB will find someone or a WR will eventually get open. If a DL is getting constant pressure it forces the offense to change it's plan to quick dump offs and screens where our great LB corps can handle it.

I think a stud DT helps more, but it normally takes a guy a couple years to become that. A good safety would probably help us more immediately.

I agree with you if it is anyone other than star, I think he has the tools to make an immediate nfl impact especially when you consider who our other options would be.

That's true, and some guys do. Star might be one of those special guys, but it sometimes hard to tell. I thought Gerald McCoy could come right in too, but it took him a bit to get going. Hopefully, we get Star and he's special (A transition might be easier on him with this team too, considering that he's surrounded by two great ends)

considering CJ,hardy, and alexander and then adding in dwan for the next couple years i'd say we were stronger on the DL by quite a bit and what we had made our secondary (minus SS) look not quite so bad towards the end last year.

i think that despite the loss of gamble (which really didn't impact the D last year anyway when he went on IR, imo) gettleman elevated the secondary with the additions he made. he didn't add much to the top, but what he did was make the unit better as a whole, but it wasn't enough...just my opinion.

the quickest and easiest thing to do to help out the secondary is provide more of a pass rush and keep more pressure on the QB and make it easier on the LBs to control the action in the middle and blitzing when needed by adding a big guy who can help eat up blockers on passing plays and take care of business in draw plays and play action fakes...adding a bit of security and making it safer for the other 3 guys on the line to focus on getting to the QB.

we need more help in the secondary, but beefing up the interior of the DL will buy some time.

Both- football is the ultimate team game

that's the goal, but it's not often you can achieve that...esp. in a short amount of time. that's why i mentioned the quickest and easiest way to improve. you make that front stout as possible and you make everyone's job behind them easier. we're closer to having a stout DL than a stout secondary. take care of that first.

In my opinion it takes the guys that rely more on speed and quickness at DT like Mccoy longer to develop than the guys who are more power based like Star and Suh.

DT for sure... Yea we would like some shutdown dbs but the sooner you get to the qb, the shorter the routes of the receivers become, and then they gotta stem out and find the QB/open space creating even more time for the DLine to get to the QB.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
