Rockets trying to trade Thomas Robinson

Recommended Posts

From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:

"The Houston Rockets are determined to trade forward Thomas Robinson – the fifth pick in the 2012 NBA draft – to create salary-cap space for the pursuit of Los Angeles Lakers’ free-agent superstar Dwight Howard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Rockets have made clear to multiple rival teams that they plan to accept the best offer to move Robinson and eliminate his $3.52 million salary for the 2013-14 season."

Thomas Robinson was clearly one of my favorite prospect in last year draft. I know he was pretty bad last season and was traded from Sac to the Rockets. Now, he may be finding a 3rd home in just after 1 year. I think the potential is there with T-Rob and there's really more than like about him than not. He's still a rookie and there' still a lot of time for him to improve his game in the NBA. I do not see him as a potential bust. I really believe he will become a capable starting PF in the league 2-3 years from now. We are clearly lacking some presence in the paint and adding a young guy like T-Rob would be a nice addition to build for the future.

What will be the cost of trading for T-Rob? Draft pick(s) (2014)? Houston clearly wants him gone. I think we can get him for cheap. IMO, Cho needs to get on the phone right now with Houston!

also, don't yall think MKG and T-Rob kinda look alike?

Not sure Robinson is a good fit at center. His ability is better suited to the PF position. I guess he could do ok in rotation, but personally it could be a waste to get him as backup to Biyombo.

As for MKG, if he doesn't improve markedly then he will likely drop to the bench if we draft Wiggins or Parker. I don't see him keeping them out at SF, and MKG isn't big enough to move to PF full time, nor does he have the skill set to drop to SG. So if we get Wiggins or Parker, then MKG's stint starting here is likely to be over.

That said, those teams do have potential.

Just a random note, but Jabari won't be playing SG.  SF or PF, much like Carmelo.  I've even seen where some GM called him Carmelo without the issues.  Not a bad comparison.

As for T-Rob, I really liked him coming out/seemed like a good kid, but I don't think he has it.

I say YES! We always say we can't discount Rookies so why not. We do not have any true PFs and plus this opens the door to pick a SG. I really like this young group.

Kemba

Odalipo/McLemore

MKG

T-Rob

Biz

Most I'd give is Portland Pick but would love to get him for a few 2nds but don't think that is possible.

How often do teams trade their top 5 pick in their rookie season?

That's all you need to know.

TRob is going to wash out of the league pretty quickly.

He rode the bench at Kansas before his final year and their tourney run. Like I said at least 100x now, Kansas did not end Carolina's season 2 years ago. Kendall Marshall's broken wrist at Creighton did.

To be fair, him getting traded by the Kings was solely a cost cutting move by an extraordinarily incompetent franchise on the verge of being sold. And the Rockets trying to trade him is strictly a salary dumping move to chase Howard.

There's no denying that for such an "NBA ready" prospect he struggled last season, but it's way too early to give up on him. Maybe he just sucks, but there are also some very valid excuses which could explain his poor play- no rookie was in a worse situation than him. While I'm not holding my breath for him to turn into a star, he still has NBA talent and could become a serviceable player.

Given how bad our frontcourt is I'd love to pick him up for cheap. However I think Morey will be able to get something decent in return for him- there will be enough interest that nobody is going to get him for free. I think we should at least be interested and inquiring about his cost, but I don't want to see us trading away good picks for him.

Never.  Literally never.  That doesnt tell you that he is a bust, that tells you the Kings have no fuging clue what they are doing running a franchise.

He never got a chance with the Kings since they already have solid big men (Cousins and Jason Thompson), and instead of doing what most lottery teams would do in their situation (cut minutes from your vets and play your rookie to see what happens) they gave him away.

Unfortunately for Robinson, he doesnt really make sense on the Rockets either since he cant shoot 3s or defend the rim and those are the most important qualities their team looks for in big guys.

I'm not saying Robinson is going to be good, he could very easily be playing in Europe in a few years.  But acting like the guys career is over because of a shitty rookie season where he never got a chance to play?  I'm not buying it, especially when there are other teams out there who just spent an entire season starting Byron Mullens and Josh Mcroberts at PF

I agree that the writing is on the wall and most players that hop from team to team this early in there career do fizzle out, but I do think it is too early for the verdict to be in on TRob.

Joe Johnson was traded by Celtics to Suns in his rookie year halfway through the season, then traded to the Hawks 3 years later only to now be consider a max level player.

Rasheed Wallace traded from Washington to Portland after rookie year.

Chris Webber was one and done in Golden State only that was more his doing than the team wanting to trade him. (I think he excercised a one-year option in his rookie deal)

Kevin Johnson was traded from Cleveland to Phoenix near the end of his rookie year.

The initial trade from Sacremento to Houston was shocking, but Houston now wants to trade him strictly to relieve cap room in order to go after Dwight Howard.  As long as we don't give up any more than a 2nd round pick, maybe a late first (not that we have any) or some cash considerations, i think a young team like the Bobcats/ Hornets could help TRob get some playing time and NBA confidence.  I was high on him before the draft last year, and although undersized, I just don't see a guy with his length and build leaving the league so soon.

This!

There was reasons that Trob was traded from Sac and now Houston wanting to trade him. It says nothing that he can't play in this league.

As far as I know, that Sac team is a capable Playoffs team with Evans, Cousins, etc. Sac has no clue to winning. We have less talents than they do and is just as good as them.

    • It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.
    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
