NFL's Best/Worst Contracts

Recommended Posts

CBSSports La Canfora took the liberty to list what he thinks are the best and worst contracts in the NFL, and here is what he came up with...

Worst

Jonathan Stewart -- Carolina Panthers ($3.2M cash; $3M cap): Stewart looked like about the fourth-best option in this crowded backfield in 2012, and even after redoing his deal to stay, this figure still seems bloated. De'Angelo Williams (another strong candidate for this list) remains with the Panthers, Cam Newton is becoming the best rushing quarterback perhaps in NFL history, and fullback Mike Tolbert sees a lot of the ball around the goal line, with seven touchdowns himself. In an era where running backs have been largely devalued, and none were taken in the first round this spring, that's a lot of money for a role player at this position.

Best

Cam Newton -- Carolina Panthers ($2.4M cash; $6M cap); Robert Griffin III -- Washington ($1.4M cash; $4.8M cap); Andrew Luck -- Indianapolis ($1.4M cash; $5M cap):I've combined all three of these guys -- all of them a top-two overall pick or higher in the past two drafts prior to 2013, because all look like true franchise quarterbacks, all have set some sort of rookie quarterback record or another, and all will be stuck playing for this through 2013. Newton, who is entering his third year, will be the first test case for the new CBA when it comes to extensions and options.

Luke Kuechly -- Carolina Panthers ($961,000 cash; $2.9M cap): I didn't want to put too many second-year players on this list, but given the dearth of impact inside linebackers these days, and this kid's tackling-machine numbers as a rookie, he's earned his way on it. He looks like the leader of the Panthers defense and their on-field brain for years to come ... and it will be years before he is paid like anything close to it.

With all the fuss with DeLo in the past, folks should honestly look at this with value. Stewart has never out done Dwill in YPC over his time here and has yet to separate himself with enough distance to justify his contract, specially considering the fact that Dwill re-structured his contract and has been the most proven RB in Panther history.......

Love Stewart, know he is younger, but he has never proven he is the future...

We are blessed to have them both + Tolbert + barner, but the $$$ is a waste.... (isn't that what everyone was saying about DeWill before he re-structured and he has ALWAYS been our homerun threat and not to mention healthy)

Flame away....

he's not wrong. both his and williams were bad. williams got rectified somewhat, but both were still bad.

From a cash/cap standpoint, his numbers are still both bigger than Stewarts this year. His is less worse than the original....both those guys should of been on the list.

Little surprised Beason wasn't there

totally agreed. forgot about beason. good catch. at least he'll be getting a lot of snaps this year, but he hasn't played but a handful of games the past two years and lost his job to a rookie and he's getting paid how much? ridiculous. he should have absolutely made that list. i think lacanfora was just being nice in not having more than stewart on that list. we should have had 3.

Stew also cant stay healthy.  Since we've got tolbert i'd be fine if we could move stew.

My how the mighty have fallen. Few months ago J-stew could do no wrong.

Healthy, he is still the bed overall RB at this point....

Still overpaid. But I think Williams should be listed before him....older and cost more

    • Apparently, it's hip surgery for Pyotr... Thank God he's pretty young bc that is gonna be one hell of a rehab. Hopefully, Bussi can keep his throne warm for him until he's ready for his triumphant return.
    • The Urban and Reich seasons were epic NFL failures for completely different reasons while also linking these 2 QBs. Wasn't Reich fired earlier in the season by a game or something?  Trevor's bust to Youngs bust is interesting and obviously I would take the former 10 out of 10 times. Still, Trevor has only had 1 game over .500 in a season until this year when playing. What I am saying is that that HC is winning with what he has, which isn't perfect, and in a place that scrapping 9 games together is not a given...usually with help from  another QB along the way. And that's in the AFC South. And the Jags are actually paying their QB vs us hopefully dodging a horrendous 5th option. So that's a lot tougher than what it cost to field Young this year or next. I wasn't really trying to prop up Lawrence but Coen. Dude is doing good work and it showed when Carolina played them. The difference between him and DC is like Lawrence and Young at the minimum IMO.
