Ellis Walks, Peters To Back Up Ward

Recommended Posts

As we all know by know, Dan Ellis declined the contract offer that the Hurricanes gave him and for the first time, JR spoke on the goaltending situation saying the following to Chip Alexander (Hurricanes beat writer)...

He (Rutherford) said there likely would be no trade for a goalie, noting the Canes "probably" would go with Justin Peters as Cam Ward's backup next season.

Bryzgalov would be nice, but I'm a huge fan of Ellis' especially after all that he has gone through to get back to the NHL.

I personally think a combination of Ward/Ellis would be a pretty good tandem.

Ellis seems to be a better overall player than Peters, and it's not that I don't like Peters; but I think he is more of an AHL starter than an NHL backup.

Ellis also played some really good hockey when his primary role was backup net-minder.

Peters showed flahes this year, after being thrown to the wolves.  He could turn into something.

Ellis is at his peak now, which is just OK.  He's not someone worth getting into a bidding war over.

I'd rather see if Peters can be a star, than go with a mid tier back up who has no further upside.  We can get someone of Ellis' level if Peters ends up busting.

    • I've shown you numerous comps for other tackles in the same age and talent range.  His contract, taking into account his age, health, etc.  is the going rate.  It's a fair deal. I've shown you examples of how long it usually takes to find even an average replacement.  Hell, look at every tackle that has ever started for the Panthers.  How many would you consider a success?  They are not easy to find. After everything we've done with this team since drafting Bryce why would we decide to let our best linemen go and add a huge question mark at tackle?   FA is a crapshoot in which any guy available will have cons/issues.  If not, they'll cost a fortune.   Outside of a first or maybe 2nd round pic next year it'll take a few years for a tackle to learn the position at the NFL level.  There are still questions about Icky. Every vet NFL player deals with maintenance.  Between the contract value and history I'm not overly worried about his knee.  I contend his knee issue isn't anything to be overly worried about.  It's not zero risk but it's an acceptable risk.  Every player we draft and every contract we sign has risk.  You're blowing up his own negative words about his knees and ignoring him saying he is healthy and the knee is a non issue.  You have a strong chicken little complex with this team.  Being he has always been a Panther they are very aware of any health issues. We paid now because now is cheaper.  If his knee was really an issue they would have waited.  That tells me it's not the issue you want it to be.
