Tight Ends - Ton o Talent, will we use it?

You acted like a two year old with my opinion on why the TEs can't be called stud.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK I LIKE IT.

Fail.

I am done now talking about this in this thread, because this is an actual topic, and a good one.

I apologize to the rest of the participants in this thread for the hijacking.

who hijacked it fireball. The OP mentioned Jake Delhomme and if the new coach could get him into the swing of using the TE's more.

you are insane

I know it was college but I did watch some vids on GB in college around draft time and did specifically look for his blocking ability. He wasn't bad really. Certainly he was competent. Jeff D needs to bust out the Daniel Graham vids for them. That dude is a MUTHA of a blocker.

I agree about Barnidge's blocking. To me, his biggest problem was his size and strength, which he supposedly has improved upon. When I saw him block in college, he usually had good position and technique, but sometimes got pushed back by bigger rushers. At the second level, though, he seemed to be much more effective. So I have faith that he can become a solid blocker for us, and as long as he can keep his speed and quickness he could be a real weapon as a receiver as well.

Keep in mind that 2008 was the first year that Davidson worked with the offense with all its pieces intact. He had great success in a number of areas. This year will be a continuation of that. I hopefully expect us to begin to develop plays which stretch the field and find the mismatches that Davidson talked about when he came here. Last year we upgraded our rushing attack. This year with Jarrett maturing, Barnidge hopefully developing, the return of Robinson, Carter and the addition of Goodsen, our receiver corps will equal our running attack. You can't compare what we did 2 or 3 years ago with what we can do now. We have upgraded our offense and giving Davidson the weapons he needs to succeed. Tight end has always been an after thought. Barnidge is the first guy who has the potential of a Witten or Gonzales. He is still raw but has the speed and hands to catch the ball and stretch the field.

I don't want Jake throwing any more than 20-25 passes a game, and I may be misunderstanding, but twice the number of passes to the TEs sounds like a 30+ pass game.

We are also a running team that eats up the clock with every play for the most part. That's not a big play game plan (even though the RBs do it), and I hope we see more short passes to the TEs and receivers. Passing as needed, hitting big plays occasionally to keep the secondary on their heels, eating up every second we can, and keeping the game in our control.

You're afraid of Jake OK. But the Coaches aren't afraid of him. I see this team as having a dual threat offense. There will be games where the passing game is clicking, games where the running game is clicking, but most will have each setting the other up.

There is a big difference between throwing 35 times because you are way behind and throwing 35 times because the offensive coordinator has the defense guessing wrong time after time. Hitting them where they ain't

I was the one who apologized. Usually when one apologizes, they are doing it on their own behalf. Sorry that was unclear for some reason.

Glad you chimed in this thread Woodie (always am). When someone with your level of knowledge sees what I saw (of course you know more of the details while I just saw results) I feel better about what I saw. Makes sense to me that bulk would play a part since you observed that he is better against the second level. He did seem a bit gazelle like for a TE.

i'm not afraid of Jake. It's just proven(stats) that the team is better when the passing attempts are ~25.

All teams are unless they have a top ten scoring defense. I had a bit of research in some other thread. Throwing more than 30+ is usually a better indicator of your defense being subpar (whether all the time or in specific games) than anything else.

Cool

Though you have to admit things are changing with that offense. The strong running game changes everything. The more they stack the box the better the passing game gets, And also the more Jake passes to different receivers, tight ends & running backs the better the passing games gets as defenses have to spread themselves even thinner.

This team has been getting Polished and Refined, not restructured so not a lot of back to square one loss of momemtum

I see TE and RB's out of backfield as BIG weapons this season.

Davidsons was able to show a pounding duo running attack last season.

This season teams have had the off season to study and make adjustments with plays and new players .

Davidson should also be doing the same ,By installing more dump passes to TE & RB's

It seems it could partly be a gameplan thing too. I just watched the GB game replay and the announcers talked about how the Cats really wanted to use a lot of RBs catching on those swing passes in that game. They did do more than usual.

This is a big strike/downfield type offense though. TEs & RBs aren't going to be as big of a part of this O pass catching wise than they would in say a WCO.

That said, when the talent dictates such, the usage should change somewhat.

Stay on topic numbskulls.

I actually question how great our talent at TE is.

King is Solid to Good

Rosario is Awful to Awesome

Barnbridge is completely unknown quantity.

i agree it's just a collection of 5th rounders that haven't really proven that much abou their talent.

How about letting it go . . . .

OK. It's not like she will ever answer me with something that makes sense anyway.

BTW the thread does bring up some interesting thoughts but key to me is that there has been a considerable change in the type of player we are going after at the TE spot. That is encouraging as it tells me that maybe the offense will begin to open up a bit more. Opening up the offense is what the team has needed for some time in my opinion. As much as it seems like I bash the QB, I really hope he gets it done.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
