So, how worried should we be about Sean Mcdermott?

Top 8 defense last year, so far, outstanding performance by the D in pre season all through the depth chart. With Hardy in a contract year, additions of Short and Star and 1 year of Kuechly experience. Its a good chance we have a top 5 D this year.

Anyone else worried he will start getting looks as a HC from teams and we lose him?

I'm worried he will likely be coaching around a big void in talent.... again. I feel no better about the secondary yet.

I don't worry about his future

I wouldn't be surprised, but there's no sense worrying over things you can't control. Either he stays or he leaves. I hope it's the former, but if not, I have faith that DG, RR, and Big Cat will find a suitable replacement. Don't forget that RR's specialty is defense too. In the meantime, I choose to sit back and watch the thing of beauty I suspect our defense is going to be this year, and enjoy it as long as I can.

Steve Wilks was actually Rivera's first choice as a DC but San Diego didn't let him interview.

If McDermott were to get a new job, I figure the DC spot goes to Wilks.

That would be up to Gettleman, ultimately. My guess, if they were to hire in house, would be Eric Washington. More of a proven commodity in the locker-room here.

Also, lets not exaggerate. Last year.

# 10 in yards per game

#18 in points against

#16 in ypc against

#32 completion % against

People are taking that total yards number and running a little too much with it. We weren't a top 8 D....in any way. Overall, we weren't really a top 10 D.

We pressured the QB like an elite D last year.....we weren't an elite D yet though

    • This while he didn't single handily LOSE the game on any one play.....    He was a first overall pick, one we paid a fortune for..... the bar for him is a 10 foot dunk not a 5"8 children's rim.   32 for 49 for 287 with 1 td and 1 int in two games vs the worst team in the conference, two critically important games that we would be 9-5 and competing for the #2 if he had led us to victory....   Ive given him props for the TD to tet.... it was the best pass ive ever seen him make.....   But putting up these kind of numbers isn't up to par. Defenses stack the box and dare him to throw....  and he still puts up medicore at best numbers.    To win with Bryce young the entire rest of the team has to be absolutely perfect to make up for his deficiencies.... so while he didn't "lose" this game for us..... HE DEFFINATLY DIDNT GO WIN IT FOR US. (Which is the REALISTIC EXPECTATION)
    • His O is just built on taking repeated shots and that’s not BY’s game.  It was always a round peg and square hole…. But I also agree with your post.  I hate OC HCs.  Especially green ones.   I never liked anything about the setup
    • I get that. He's also trying to do HC and OC this year which I think is just too much for him. I think it's hard to call plays from the sidelines. That view from up top helps them see what a defense is doing better. A few HCs can do it because they have the QBs and experience to pull it off. DC has neither. I think DC may have spread himself too thin and Bryce isn't the QB to be able to pull of his end of it either. How much they compliment each other in creating this offensive bleh, yet to be determined. Doesn't really matter because it's still awful.
