A couple thoughts about our preseason offense

Why else isn't it moving? And are they trying to put Cam in tough scenarios (learning opportunity) with a healthy combo of showing the league nothing?

4 play actions out of 40 plus snaps....our actual offense is built on various forms of play action

There are lots of reasons why we aren't clicking on O....but I highly doubt the goal is to click. Other wise we would be using play action, Cam running etc. They likely are just practicing basics to see how guys perform in what are likely non ideal scenarios...evaluating more than anything.

Give Ron this to date....our week 1 offense can't be predicted by preseason. He definitely holds his cards close

I kinda agree. I mean Fua played forever with the first team. I haven't seen many screens to take advantage of the blitzing defenders either. We will see a bit more game 3 of preseason because the team needs some offensive production and confidence, but we won't be doing anything cutting edge and innovative until week 1.

I don't think they have shown anything yet. I don't think anyone can know what this team will be until after the first month of the season.

No QB dives, Bootlegs or Play action in the Red Zone. All are parts of our Red Zone packages.

 

No Read option or Smoke screens to Smitty which are a big part of this offense.

 

Vanilla Zone and Man coverage with simple blitzes and Dline stunts on Defense. We all know Mcdermont and Rivera got more schemes for this defense then they are showing in the preseason.

 

If people would take the time and look they would see we are showing nothing in this preseason.

I can only recall 2 screens. Both to Barner, and both from DA. Our RBs catch plenty of passes when our O is clicking.

 

We have used zero misdirection, read option, or anything other than off tackle or up the gut.

 

We are using no motion and running basic routes.

 

In other words. Our O is as vanilla as it can get.

 

On D, we are mixing and matching personnel with an eye on evaluation. Very few blitzes or stunts.

 

Running basic cover 2 and zone. Very little man to man, or bump and run. Putting no pressure on the CBs.

 

In short. The D is pretty much as vanilla as it can get.

 

tldr version. It is the preseason. We are evaluating. It sucks for fans. But it is important for the coaches.

I saw this thread started by CRA and was not expecting a rational well thought out post that didn't have any negative connotations to it. I was thinking, here we go again.

But hey, even CRA gets it. Who'd a thunk it. Just kidding.

I know the players want to win. The coaches do as well. But I also know that finding out who can, or can't, do what, is more important. Unfortunately, most fans see the bad, and that is what they take away from it.

Yeah crazy concept. Trying to evaluate players at the bottom of your roster in games that don't count.

It's nice to see him looking at it in terms of what a actual Coaching staff looks for in the Preseason.

Very well said. The deal with preseason is to see who can play the right way. Who can fight through blocks the right way, who stays in the right lanes, who can make the right block, who runs the right route the right way, and most importantly, who can do their job the right way?

Keeping the plays simple is the best way to evaluate. That way the coaches know exactly what they are looking at/for. They are looking for players that can get the job done, and do it the right way.

Some teams use preseason as practice. They run all their plays and don't care who knows it. Rivera is old school, as you well know, he likes to keep it simple and evaluate every player from a small pool of plays. Not running a hundred plays makes evaluation easier.
