A couple thoughts about our preseason offense

CRA

Recommended Posts

“We’re trying to score, we’re trying to move the ball. We’re not installing a fake offense that we only run in the preseason,” veteran left tackle Jordan Gross said. “You have certain goals that the coaches want to accomplish each week and different plays you want to feature. You’re still disappointed when you lose, especially when you don’t score touchdowns.”

The Panthers’ playbook is sure to open up come Sept. 8 against Seattle, especially if all their offensive pieces are healthy. Newton knows the team can once again be a top-12 offense like it has in his first two seasons, but for now, it’s a matter of running the plays that are called.

JStew being out has a lot to do with our putrid looking run game, along with the fact that the offensive line isn't very good (and there's no depth on it whatsoever)

Also look at the fact that we likely will run quite a bit against the Ravens trying to see who is going to get the best push against a tough run defense.  That isn't something you do if you are gameplanning to win.  You would be throwing the whole time to set up the run later. I f we come out running then you know it is more about establishing the ability to run than it is taking what the defense is giving you.  Baltimore will come out blitzing right away and playing 8 in the box daring us to run.  You will get a sense of whether  we are gameplanning or not based on whether we come out throwing or running.  I still expect our defense to be vanilla and not blitz like Baltimore will be doing which may still make us look worse than we will be when we are bringing our pressure defense.  I do expect us to blitz more than against Philly. We will see.  I like everyone want the offense to do great.  I am just not going to make too much of it if they don't until week 1 when we have to. Even then, we usually suck in our opener regardless of how we do the rest of the year.

The issue with whether or no the other team blitzes is this, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh all run a 34, so they're definitely going to be blitzing at least one linebacker if not more. Gone are the days of trying not to blitz in preseason. We need to realize this, and try, at least, to put on a half decent game. This is the 3rd preseason game. If any of them matter, it's this one. Not being able to stop Baltimore's blitzes, their  rush, etc, is going to be very telling of how we could perform the first week.

Each week we get more experience against the 3-4 blitz.  That will only help us against New Orleans and the teams we see this who run that.  Still the Seahawks run mostly a 4-3.  How will one predict the other.

I think you're looking to far into a preseason game. The Eagles have a new system that they desperately need to get as many reps practicing as possible. It was obvious we did not game plan for that game. It was just no huddle bs all game.

I understand not game planning but there is nothing wrong with making adjustments based on what the team is showing you

Enough about the OL being garbage....

Why else isn't it moving? And are they trying to put Cam in tough scenarios (learning opportunity) with a healthy combo of showing the league nothing?

Zero read options

1 half ass run by Cam

4 play actions out of 40 plus snaps....our actual offense is built on various forms of play action

There are lots of reasons why we aren't clicking on O....but I highly doubt the goal is to click. Other wise we would be using play action, Cam running etc. They likely are just practicing basics to see how guys perform in what are likely non ideal scenarios...evaluating more than anything.

Give Ron this to date....our week 1 offense can't be predicted by preseason. He definitely holds his cards close

This has zero to do with Silatolu, Bell, and Williams consistently missing blocks. They O-line isn't executing

Why the fug would you make adjustment when your whole mission is player evaluations?

Why show anything that you might use as a adjustment in the regular season in the preseason??

Again they want to see which players on the bubble of the roster have to offer not try and win meaningless games.

That is why I said enough about them sucking and wanted to discuss some of the other reasons....they are the primary reason the basic don't work well

i just posted to show the offensive stats in my signature. thats all. carry on.

oh and btw i completely agree that our season playbook is tucked away and im glad. no need to evaluate the performance of our starters, we all know what they can do. although you see other teams such eagles mix it up big time in preseaon, that will hurt them come week 1.

thats all.

Where did you read the Eagles were going all out with the playbook and mixing it up? Unless you consider looking better conditioned, more focused, and not just going through the motions "mixing it up"?

What do game adjustments have to do with player evaluation? A vanilla scheme is not an adjustment

in the context I am referring to. Do you not think if Smitty says I am open when they show a certain look that the coaches would not tell Cam to throw it to him just because it is preseason? You are misunderstanding what I am trying to say.
