Mike Tolbert?

Recommended Posts

After hearing Tolbert's quote about "broken promises," anybody else also think he is vastly underutilized? I used to love watching him in SD when he averaged 600 rushing yards, 350 receiving yards, and 10 TD's.

As my favorite addition of 2012, he seemed to do nothing last year (except vulture goal line TD's). With the excitement surrounding Barner, I feel everyone is forgetting about the best complete FB in the NFL.

Every time he touches the rock it seems like he picks up a 1st down or TD. His pass-catching, durability, and blocking out of the backfield are second-to-none, but he seemed to disappear in the playbook for some reason. I know we have a crowded backfield already, but I love watching this bowling ball plow over defenses.

Here's to wishful thinking that he is actually implemented in the offensive playbook (not just kept to blocking and 1-yard rushes).

I can tell you guys this..

He very much regrets leaving San Diego to come here. Not only did he take 1mil less, but we dont use him nearly as much as San Diego did. Now, we are going to a more traditional offense where he will be used as a tradition HB or FB, where he thought he was comming here to be some hybrid type player.

Not only do we underuse him, we underuse our entire backfield. Tolbert could be the starting HB in San Diego for a mil more. Ryan Mathews is a bust.

I love Tolbert though. Him, The Kraken, and Mr. Alexander came over amd signed my hat at the giants pre game last year. The only good thing that came my way that night, after emtying my bank accounts and starving the following month lol

Agree 100%. He would definitely be the starting HB in SD. Taking a $1mil paycut I thought he would be a key part to our offense, so let's hope his "broken promises" quote holds true and he was just a victim of Chud's offense. Could be wishful thinking but I just don't understand why you wouldn't get him the ball.

I don't t know that he was under utilized so much as utilized in a different way. Sure, he may not be the featured back he was at SD, but he still is an integral part of our offense. I don't think for a minute that the spotlight being shine on Barner diminishes in any way what MT brings to the table. Instead, I think Barner's moment in the sun is simply enthusiasm for a newcomer who shows promise as the next star in our RB pipeline. None of which makes Tolbert and his smash mouth play any less important to what this team wants to do. I think we'll take care of Mike just fine.

    • If we lose tomorrow we’d have to sweep the Bucs in order to get into the playoffs. With a loss tomorrow the Bucs would then hold the tie breaker if we finished tied If we can’t split with NO then we sure as hell not sweeping Tampa It’s win or go home tomorrow in my eyes  Biggest game since 2017 playoff game imo
    • Grok AI: No, there are no credible reports that the Carolina Hurricanes offered Jake Guentzel the same contract terms as Tampa Bay (7 years, $63 million total, $9 million AAV) before he signed with the Lightning. Reliable sources, including The Athletic, consistently reported that Carolina’s offer during negotiations was an eight-year deal worth $64 million ($8 million AAV). Guentzel did not accept it promptly, leading the Hurricanes to trade his negotiating rights to Tampa Bay on June 30, 2024, for a 2025 third-round pick. He then quickly signed the 7x$9M deal with the Lightning on July 1, 2024. Guentzel himself later reflected (in 2025 interviews) that staying in Carolina was his initial preference, but negotiations stalled and “didn’t work out,” with Tampa’s opportunity becoming a “no-brainer.” No reports from outlets like ESPN, NHL.com, or insiders (e.g., Elliotte Friedman, Pierre LeBrun, Frank Seravalli) indicate Carolina ever matched or offered the Lightning’s exact terms—total money, AAV, or length. The extra year was Carolina’s key advantage, but they reportedly stuck closer to $8M AAV and moved on when Guentzel explored options.
