Avenged Sevenfold: Hail to the King

I've posted about this band throughout the years. The huddles opinion of them seems to be 6/10 for the metal scene. Their new album is available for streaming on iTunes. Album release is the 27th. This is the first cd produced without drummer Jimmy foREVer Sullivan. Its a take on the best 70-80's rock bands with the classic A7X twist. Theres plenty of material in this album to enjoy. 'Shepherd of Fire' and 'Hail to the King' make awesome sports intros. I cant post with youtube right now but maybe a fellow deathbat could help me out.

I have defended this band for a long time, but it's getting harder and harder. Basically the whole album is a direct rip-off of several other bands.  Just listen to "This Means War" and then go listen to "Sad But True" from Metallica. Same fuging song.  "Doing Time" is essentially just a GnR song.

They have been stripping their songs down for years.  It has just gotten to the point where everything they do seems lazy and uninspired.  They write some basic rock/metal riff, come up with some moderately catchy melody, and then ship it out.  It seemed like Waking the Fallen and City of Evil were both albums where they really thought about each and every moment of the song.  Not anymore.

I've been listening to Avenged for a while (yes, I'm a 57-year old metal head) and I really like some of their stuff yet I'm scratching my head over some of their other stuff. It seems as though they lose some focus or they're just gathering up all teir unrecorded works and putting them together in some order for a release. This is the producer's problem, not necessarily the band's.

"Hail to the King" has a very definite Metallica sound to it, but at the same time it's a pretty commercial effort and a good choice to spike some pre-release interest in the new CD.

That being said, anything they have with Mike Portnoy on drums I'll listen to.

For those of you who know Portnoy is likely the best drummer to come along since Neal Peart, listen to some Adrenaline Mob and his new project Winery Dogs....

A7X should tour with Five Finger Death Punch

FFDP is pretty tight in concert. One of those bands that sounds surprisingly good live. I thought FFDP made an appearance at the 2012 Orion Festival in NJ, where Avenged was one of many bands, but I was mistaken.

Anyone here into Volbeat? Another very good live band.

I listened to the entire album and I really like the new sound. From a pure adrenaline and getting pumped up standpoint this is by fair their best work. Like someone else said though, there are some blatant ripoff songs on the album. You can especially hear a lot of Metallica and Iron Maiden in it at times. I love the new sound though. I think it's a good mix of traditional A7X and a heavier darker sound Some recommended tracks:

Hail to the King

Shepherd of Fire

Requiem

Planets

    • Why are you so fixated on yards? Even if yards were a good judge of QB play, his low yardage totals in some of those games were partly a function of drops (looking at you Xavier Leggette…).  I’m not advocating that Bryce was elite for the last half of last year, but the eye test certainly supported high level QB play for large stretches. He made a lot of high difficulty, put it on the money/drop in the bucket throws. He converted on 3rd and 4th down, kept drives moving, and put the team in position to win games. And it’s not on him that the defense blew it late after he led game tying drives, Leggette dropped a game winning TD, or Chuba fumbled the ball in OT. We could have finished the season close to .500 with wins against 3 playoff teams including KC and Philly during that stretch largely due to Bryce’s play.    Has he sustained this level of play long enough to deserve an higher ranking? No. But for judging based in that stretch alone, he would. But whether he can perform more consistently at that level or build on that, and thus earns a higher ranking, remains to be seen.
    • Totally agree with you, if we had invested in drafting a corner or two I wouldn’t even ponder adding Ramsey. But, to be honest we legit added nobody to our corner room this offseason we have nobody worth developing. Even if Chau Smith Wade is better then what I think, he is the only guy we have invested draft capital into outside of our starters.
    • Look at his snap counts, your telling me that his entire college and pro football career every coach he has had has misused him? No offense but I don’t think you understand the role of a slot corner. Mike Jackson is the literal definition of an outside zone corner, he would be totally inept as a slot corner. Ala why he has been an outside corner his entire career.
