Injury settlement essentially absolves the team of any responsibilities toward him and makes him a free agent.

Don't have all the ins and outs, but I've seen players sue a team that releases them after an injury.

 

I think part of the reason for sending a guy to IR and then giving him a settlement is to prevent that.
