So, will Cam pull a Michael Jordan?

After this whole Under Armour visor controversy with Cam as the front man taking the heat duing the whole shebang (completely ignoring a hundred other players violating the rules, but whatever) I got to thinking this could be an excellent marketing opportunity for both Cam and UA.  Like really big.

Under Armour simply couldn't buy the type of publicity they've gotten over this past week--and that they're likely going to continue to get the following weeks as they'll no doubt talk about it at our next game.  Now... they could simply just cash in and enjoy the publicity they've gotten so far, ooorrrr they could go down an old legendary path that was paramount in turning Nike into the corporate giant that it is today:

Maybe we should ultimately thank NBA commissioner David Stern for the Air Jordan signature sneaker series’ rise to power. On September 15th, 1985, Nike unleashed the first installment of the Air Jordan series in the form of the Air Jordan I, Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker. Although it would not receive an abundance of preliminary attention, an act from the NBA would later propel this signature line into the biggest and most recognizable sneaker series ever created.

It was on this day, in sneaker history, (October 18th, 1985) that NBA commissioner David Stern officially banned Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan I from the NBA courts for failure to meet the on-court dress code. Stern declared that MJ’s shoes did not properly match the Chicago Bulls jerseys. Prior to this memorable act, David Stern fined Michael Jordan $5,000 every time he stepped on the court in the Air Jordan I. In a gutsy move, Nike willingly paid MJ’s fine every game, as the shoe company discovered the potential of excessive notoriety and hoopla with this act.

Ironically, after the Air Jordan I was banned from the NBA courts, sales for this sneaker skyrocketed. Nike lost a ton of money by paying MJ’s fines; however, they gained a limitless amount of publicity that transferred into the biggest signature line to date. One of Nike’s first commercials for this sneaker showed MJ wearing the Air Jordan 1s and stated a simple message: On October 18th, the NBA through them out of the game (referring to the shoes). Fortunately, the NBA can’t stop you from wearing them.

Now everyone knows that, whether you love him or hate him, we have one of the most marketable faces in the NFL in our young QB Cam Newton.  Merely mentioning his name in your article title leads to guaranteed hits.  Not only that, but he has nearly unparalleled talent, which if realized, could end with him being one of the all-time greats.

So what do you think they should do?  This is seriously a HUGE opportunity for Cam, Under Armour, and Charlotte.  fug it, let's embrace all this poo.

All he has to do is Win this year & take Panthers to the playoffs and his endorsements will go sky high.

We need more of this Cam early on in the year.anigif_enhanced-buzz-31452-1355085179-2_

Nike is the one that has the deal in place with the NFL, and it's not like they could really call foul play here.  They did the same exact thing with Jordan during their rise to the top... and it's largely a reason why they're at the top.

This is the perfect chance for UA to take their poo to the next level.  I know if I was a big wig up their in the UA corporate offices I'd be salivating all over this opportunity.

Guys, we're talking about visor clips, things so insignificant that Cam didn't even pick them for his helmet, the equipment manager did. And the only football items that sell to the average fan are jerseys, nobody buys football cleats to wear around the house. UA may enjoying the free publicity but they're not hoping to sell a million of little plastic clips.

I'm talking about the big picture, not just visor clips.  Think of the visor clips as just the catalyst for something much larger they could potentially get rolling.

Like flat out rolling out with non-sanctioned non-blacked out signature Cam Newton Under Armour gear on game day.  That would generate tons of press and capitalize on the story they've already got going.  And with a player as popular/notorious as Cam Newton... I really think there's a huge opportunity there.

He's already the front man for the whole thing, might as well go with it.
