PS4 or Xbox1?

I preordered the PS4 but I did so with free shipping so It's not expected until 11/20-11/23.

The PS4 launch lineup is very poor. Knack is very average and Killzone is a dull sequel from what I've read. Really the PS4 has the weakest launch lineup of the three consoles. The Wii U with Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land and Zombi U was a better lineup.

Xbox One has the best game lineup at launch. Dead Rising, Ryse, Forza, those are impressive launch titles.

I typically buy all the Sony and Nintendo consoles and handhelds as I prefer the Japanese games like Mario, Final Fantasy, Tales,  etc.

I'll probably pick up Battlefield 4. I don't really like FPS games but I hear it has stunning graphics and will be something to show the system off with. Can't believe there is no Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, etc. Even one of these games would've been nice.

Those will come. I think PS4 is holding back on revealing big titles until closer to Black Friday or Christmas, just to totally piss on Microsoft's release numbers.

Dead Rising is impressive? I guess if you enjoy the same repetitive mindless game over and over again sure. Dead Rising is about the last exclusive I actually would want if I wasn't getting an X1. I won't even bother renting it from Gamefly.

As for Killzone being a dull sequel....it's actually probably the most different of any of the Killzone games so that's pretty hard to understand. Am I bummed that Watchdogs, Infamous and Drive Club got pushed back? Absolutely. But to say the PS4 launch lineup is weaker than the WiiU's is incorrect. Did you even play Zombie U? It was complete garbage. New Super Mario Brothers U was the one saving grace in that entire launch lineup. Even the 2K14 the WiiU got was a watered down port where half the features didn't work as well as they did on the current gen. Between 2K14, Killzone, Resogun (which is free by the way), Battlefield 4 and Fifa 14 I would say the PS4 lineup is pretty good for a launch console. It's certainly better than the 360 or PS3's launch lineup. The X1 still has the best list (mainly because of Forza), but the PS4 isn't weak, a joke or any of the other things I've heard it called. Since when did we expect console launches to feature AAA games? They hardly ever do.

they're cutting microsoft out of the pc biz because of windows 8

but yeah, you can build your own steam machine, or go buy a dell and put the Steam OS on it and call it a steam machine

what it is, is an entirely open platform console

I don't get the their hate on Windows 8.  So people don't like the tile interface and that they have a store.  You can still install your own apps and games (I have on a windows 8 PC that I still can't get updated to 8.1 - another issue another time).

I would love to see how they handle the legacy of directX games from the past 20 years that people still love to play.  Will they use a WINE like solution (which isn't pretty) or get folks make it in OpenGL.  I'm on the same boat as you and Zod regarding OpenGL, I love it.  They just play better in OpenGL.

Fair enough. I've never played a Dead Rising game and thought the trailer looked cool while I've played all the Killzone games and didn't see much interesting in the trailer. I am still waiting for my PS4. Resogun does look impressive after doing some research on it.

Launch is overrated though, that's why I got a PS4 even though I think the launch is relatively weak. Best launch I ever saw was the Sega Dreamcast. That console was the best example of not wanting to show your entire deck too early.

I always preferred OpenGL to directx anyways. Maybe developers will start switching back.

http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/01/Why-you-should-use-OpenGL-and-not-DirectX

other than the unreal engine, i don't really like the way directx feels and looks

I read a great article many years ago(mid 2000s) about how directx 'won' the battle with opengl.  In the 90s most games would implement both and you could choose, but over time microsoft was working faster to keep up with what ati and nvidia were doing with the hardware.  From what I remember, the opengl board were being very careful about how the api was devloped(not just doing what the card makers wanted, but questioning if it was the right way) while microsoft just coded away.  As a result directx had better support for the latest and greatest hardware features so game makers switched solely to directx.  This was around the time programmable shaders were coming out so support for those features was very important.

I would love for opengl to make a comeback but it'll be hard.  As the article zod posted says, directx is engrained in the game developer community.

edit:  this article says it a little better http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/opengl-directx,2019.html

A turning point was reached with DirectX 8, released in 2001. For the first time, Microsoft’s API did more than just copy from SGI. It actually introduced innovations of its own like support for vertex and pixel shaders. SGI, whose main source of revenue was the sale of expensive 3D workstations, was in a bad position, having failed to foresee that the explosion of 3D cards for gamers would prompt ATI and Nvidia to move into the professional market with prices so low (due to economies of scale) that SGI couldn’t keep up. OpenGL’s development was also handicapped by bitter disputes among its proponents. Since the ARB—the group in charge of ratifying the API’s development—included many different, competing companies, it was hard to reach agreement on the features to be added to the API. Instead, each company promoted its own agenda. Conversely, Microsoft was working solely with ATI and Nvidia, using its weight to cast a deciding vote if there was disagreement.
