McCown played pretty well last night in relief of an injured Jay Cutler.

Smitty made reference to him on radio yesterday as well, pointing out to the guys on The Drive that "White Chocolate" would be starting.

So, if you had a choice at backup QB next season, would you want to stick with Derek Anderson or would you be interested in giving Drago another shot?

Hard to compare when we haven't seen Anderson play at all.  Don't get me wrong, I hope that Cam keeps starting and we never have to find out whether Anderson can do the job or not.  But who knows who is better in our vertical passing attack which is not what Chicago's runs or what McCown played in last night.

I know Trestman is A West Coast disciple.

Comparisons:

Little doubt McCown wins handily in the mobility department. You could argue there's less changeup in how you'd run the offense with him as number two.

Anderson probably makes the better mentor though. As passers? Both can be decent. Both can also be bad. Probably give Anderson the edge as he gas more starts.

One thing thougj: In general, Anderson's never looked that great without Chudzinski coaching him. Now, who knows? We saw both sides of him in preseason.

I'm torn.

I think McCown is in the perfect system for him.  He is mobile for sure but doesn't have a big arm and doesn't throw a great deep ball.  I think he could handle the read option but am not sure if he is durable enough for running that often. It s hard to say that Anderson would be a whole lot better though except he has played in this system for a few years and is used to everyone. If Cam went down it would be a downgrade no matter who we used.

Good as he is, doubt he can be his own backup.

As I recall, it was originally "White Vick" after he looked impressive running against us (back when he was with the Cardinals).

"White Vick" was the eagles back up a couple years ago.

Mike Kafka I think.

I guess the nature of any questions about backup QBs ultimately boil down to which one drops the level of play off the least :lol:

Sad but true.  

 

the fact that you can't afford to pay big bucks to the starter and the backup might be a reason that teams should draft QBs more often in the second to 4th rounds because if they can pick things up like many have seemed to do lately you get them for 4 years for a song.  When their second contract comes up and you like the starter better, you can trade them and get something in return.   Unless of course they are awful like Clausen.

Like the Falcons did with Schaub.

Redskins may try with Cousins too (though if I were them, I'd keep him since RG3 is fragile as a China doll).

Smitty still seemed to have good feelings about McCown, for what it's worth.

      The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.

      I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
