RGIII: "Media trying to Character Assassinate Me"

bLACKpANTHER

Recommended Posts

Excerpts from a few draft profiles.  See if you can tell who they are...

Tends to lock on to his primary target under duress... Too often sidearm-slings the ball and does not step into throws... Played in an overly simplified offense that did not force the QB to learn the position and needs to be trained in the mechanics of dropping back from under center... Drifts in the pocket. Downfield accuracy must improve...

Played in a QB-friendly offense, operating heavily out of the shotgun, and will need time to acclimate to the speed of the pro game... Misses some open receivers, and accuracy is inconsistent... Questionable mental toughness... Does not have a commanding on-field presence - confidence wanes...

Far from a finished product and lacks natural passing skills with an overly muscled frame and marginal lower-body mechanics... Really struggled working under center at the Senior Bowl with raw footwork...and too often botched the center-snap exchange... Cannot unload the ball quickly and does not always feel the rush... Worked exclusively out of the shotgun... Can be flustered when his first two reads are covered and has a tendency to take off running...

Faced marginal competition... Operated heavily out of the shotgun in an offense featuring simplified reads and will require an adjustment period to a pro-style offense... Footwork is inconsistent - will require a lot of work on his mechanics and reads... Too streaky... Does not have a strong on-field demeanor or play with fire... Mental toughness and competitiveness need to be examined closely...

Raw positional instincts and footwork as only a one-year starter... Still makes some boneheaded decisions and forces the ball into coverage... Has a tendency to bail out of the pocket too soon and let his eyes drop to the rush... Worked almost exclusively out of the gun in a spread-option offense and threw a lot of high-percentage passes that padded his production...

Makes ill-advised decisions zeroing in on receivers and overly relying on his arm strength... Is too easily rattled by pressure... Mechanics always could be a problem... Inconsistent accuracy and ball placement and it diminishes greatly on the move, where he makes his receivers work too hard for the ball...  Limited field vision - does not cycle through progressions... Does not play with energy or demonstrate on-field command... Immature, is not a respected leader and character needs to be evaluated very closely... Does not come across well in interviews and must prove his commitment to the game...

Too manufactured - has a high-effort delivery... Inconsistent deep accuracy - was 0-for-7 throwing to his deep right in five games charted the past two years...  Had a strong supporting cast with receivers who attacked the ball... Has a sense of entitlement... Arrogant - can come off as having all the answers and struggle to win a locker room. Still immature. Comes across as overly staged, scripted and disingenuous in interviews and does not have the type of presence desired in the face of a franchise. Is not a fan of the weight room...

Only hint I'll give is that they were all considered among the ten best QB prospects available the year they were drafted.

Personally, I think that RG has been figured out.  He cannot run in this league because he is too frail.

RG III is the product of a college system and conference that was characterized by wide-open offenses and games that looked like basketball scores.  Even now he cannot succeed in the worst division in football.  They will finish last.

And he thinks his character is the issue?

Salute...All points well taken.

Lol. Mr Scot still doesn't get it on this.

Just because someone says something about player x and something about player y doesn't mean anything when it comes to racial stereotyping.

It is the ole backstop to try to ignore racial stereotypes by saying "he said something about that guy too!!"

People say "These sorts of things only get talked about with black quarterbacks, therefore it's racial".

Examples are shown of the same criticisms being made of white quarterbacks.

"Even if it gets said about white quarterbacks too, it's still racial when it's said about black quarterbacks."

Yeah...okay

Choosing to ignore the use of stereotypes does not mean they don't exist.

And assuming they're at the root of every single criticism that gets made is foolish, stupid and accomplishes nothing.

You've got people here who go screaming "racism" every time something bad gets said about a black quarterback regardless of whether there's any actual reason to believe there's a racial aspect to it.  It gets pretty ridiculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that anyone here said they are at the root of every single criticism.

There will certainly be people who look for that sort of thing no matter what. But simply lumping that small group of individuals in with everyone else as nothing more than a "race baiter" or whatever label, is irresponsible, and does nothing to correct the issues at hand.

There's a difference in what was said and your interpretation.  The statement wasn't that he's being criticized due to his race, it's whether the race of someone determines the intensity and type of criticism.  This is a valid point, especially on this board and having to deal with all of the issues with Cam and the media.

I can point to numerous differences in treatment of players in like positions.  Some here are digging way too deep for excuses, it's okay, it happens everyday in all types of situations, but it doesn't mean that it isn't worth discussing.

I'll put two extremes like this, if The Golden Calf of Bristol was black would he have ever been drafted in the first round/given as many chances as he was given?  Would he have been as popular in terms of the amount of support he undeservedly received?  NO

If Cam was white would he have suffered so much criticism?  Would he still be so controversial, would he have been accepted and supported sooner?  NO, he would be loved and forgiven, even more than the current media darling who did much worse than Cam in college, "Johnny Football"

And before you begin to lay out all of the reasons why these guys were treated the way they were treated, to the level they were treated as such, please use examples of players who actually fit the criteria and were treated as such... don't worry I'll wait.  That's the point, and it is valid.

T-bow was drafted in the first round largely because Josh McDaniels thought he was way smarter than he actually was.  Nobody else was gonna touch him in round one, and McDaniels got plenty of scorn for it.

As to Manziel, there's loads of dislike for him in media circles and you don't have to look that hard to find it.  There's also plenty of dislike for him on this board (a fair share of it from me).

And if you really think white QBs are always "loved and forgiven" for their misdeeds, you might wanna google Ryan Leaf.  or for that matter, just go back to the draft profiles I posted and tell me who they are.
