I wonder how Cutler's contract will affect Cam's

I just heard on Sports Nation that Cutler got $50 mil guaranteed with a 7 year, $18 mil per year contract. Cutler is 30, and people are still talking about his talent and potential. You'd think that he was Cam's age the way that they talk about his perceived upside, but he has been around the block, and, at least in my mind, hasn't played as well as Cam, considering that he has been in the league for so many more years. That being said, I think that Cam is going to be offered a similar contract (perhaps for a shorter span, say 5 years), because Cam's game has proven to be just as viable's as Cutler's (in reference to being a franchise QB).

The last few years seem to show that teams are increasingly willing to move on from quarterbacks (see Gabbert, Blaine; Weeden, Brandon; Ponder, Christian; etc.) that suck - partially due to the new rookie contracts - and more willing to handsomely reward the ones that aren't elite but well, at least they don't suck (Flacco, Cutler, Ryan, Romo, etc.). We can argue the merits of individual contracts and perceived value of individual players, but at the end of the day, Cam Newton is getting a big fat contract cause he doesn't suck. You don't have to be Manning, Brady, or Brees to get a monster contract. You just have to not be Blaine Gabbert.

    • I never thought a second look was even necessary. I was begging the football gods not to have us trade up to the 1st pick. And damn once we did it was a thoroughbred vs a little pony.    If you have a perceived generational player in the pool and you have the 1st pick, you just don’t trade it. In the first place. But all this Bryce drama - which (understandably) takes over almost any thread, just like this one - would never have happened if the team was not sold to Tepper.
    • I agree. I understand why he did though. And surely he had his parents in his ear who have always gone out of their way to make sure he always had the best and the least amount of adversity around him to that point in his life advising him to do so. Where I take the most issue with it is when people who just want to be sycophants start listing off other QB's who didn't throw at the combine and you don't even make it through half the names before your eyes roll right into the back of your head realizing every single of those QB's who didn't throw already clearly showcased the necessary prerequisite physical talents needed for the position.
