Steve Smith Hall of Fame credentials

Well they would be wrong. Smith in his prime is better than Fitzgerald.

Says the Panther fanbase....

Nationally, he isn't. Different players who go about things different. But if you arguement he gets into the HOF bc guys like Fitz will be deemed lesser WRs.....your arguement is fatally flawed IMO

I don't think the difference is as far as you think.

What difference?

I am not he one saying they are on different tiers. One isn't a lesser WR.....Fitz however will have better numbers

The way they go about playing the position is different. One talks, one is silent. One is has always been a little trouble, the other the first in the anti-diva class that emerged in this era

I agree about the numbers but not about the several other criteria the hof voters take into account.

I do have to admit that Smitty will probably be a long shot but a fan can dream... :-)

okay, what other criteria....

The height argument IMO won't do that much for him and that IMO is the only "other" factor he will have over someone like Fitz....but then the numbers squash that

I have always maintained 89 has an outside shot....but he would have to build his postseason resume. He was off to a good start. If he could make say 2 more and make deep runs with a ring I think he could get in. But to get in he would need to be the owner of best postseason production for a WR to add his resume (and I don't think he has the ability at this stage unfortunately)

He's got a few things working for him on top of the overall numbers:

Was he ever the best wide receiver in the game? Yes (see triple crown)

Was he unique/did he change the way people looked at the position?

Yes.

Did he perform best on the biggest stages?

Yes.

Was he memorable?

Yes.

Does he have a highlight reel of plays that make you go "Wow, how'd he do that?"

You better believe it.

Did he overcome adversity?

Yes.

Is his story marketable?

Redemption/growth story among the most marketable you can think of.

Add those kinds of things to great overall numbers and the fact that the NFL wants and needs a Panthers representative in Canton, and I think his chances of getting in are better than you think.

Thank God I didn't have to type that out...

Here you go, CRA.

Thanks to Rules and Regs for the post and his appreciation of correct grammer.

and I think you could argue most of those for someone like Fitz as well....

The height issue again being the thing that stands out (adversity)

The redemption one I could give you as well.....but that is also a positive slant on a pretty big negative of his.

I don't think he changed the position though. He just didn't meet the ideal standard.

Tomorrow the op, I think he can accomplish all these top10 things that you mentioned except for the 24 tds. That's being said this man belongs in the Hall irregardless.

It's nice to have a civil debate on the huddle.

Bravo, CRA. You might be right, man, but I hope not.

But like I said, I still think he has a shot but he needs to finish off the incredible start to his postseason resume to be the thing that separates him.

I just think Father Time might of caught him....not sure he has the skills for a gaudy stat run again.

HOF talent for sure. Best players don't always have the HOF resume....

    • Good game so far.  Solid trench battles, two young well built defenses, and my 2 fave coaches.  Stafford is really damn good.  SEA OL is overperforming.
    • Okay then. To me that means Russell Wilson was Coryell. Because I see the proposition completely in the Russell Wilson punt/pass put it up for grabs mold. Count on the receiver to catch it or knock it down.    And the reason I thought that was the intent with Legette is the abysmal downfield game from 2023. As in, there was barely any.   I look at it as if… the result of a deep attempt isn’t as important as the opponent understanding they have to defend it. So I was all for some 50/50s. Coryell, Walsh whoever.  I do favor the Coryell approach personally but also very much value versatility, it doesn’t have to be strict. Just make the defense defend the whole field, however you do it. It has to include downfield throws.
    • Sold, or in the process of being sold. Could be either way. Consider this for a second... Last season, our defensive coordinator steered what many have called the worst defense in NFL history.  Canales would absolutely have been justified in firing him, and no one would have blamed him if he had.  But what did he do? He gave Evero another chance to come back and prove he could be better. Does that tell us something about Canales? I think it does. Now apply that to Bryce 😕
