At WR would you rather draft for......

hardy is a first round tag.

he has the second most sacks in the NFL. and is in the top 3 best defensive ends in the nfl right now.

Hear me out before you jump down my throat.

I understand Hardy is HUGE part of why our DL is so good against the run and pass. And I know Hardy is still young. But say we could get a first, third, seventh this year, and maybe a fourth or something like that next year.

With money being so tight this offseason this would allow us to address many needs in the draft. 2 1st rounders, 1 second round and 2 third round picks. This is how teams become good for long periods of time as opposed to having good years here and there.

I realize our D relies on our DL to get pressure before getting exposed but with the extra pick maybe we can get another DE too. I wouldn't be mad if Hardy stayed, but if DG drafts smart and gets good value for Hardy, it could be huge for this franchise.

We are just a couple pieces away from being a dominate team, we have such a good foundation with Cam on O and Keek on D.

1st round: WR, DE or OL (BPA)

2nd round: WR

3rd round: CB, OL or DE whichever we didnt draft in 1st

What do you think?

You seem like someone who is usually pretty level headed, so I'm curious to hear your opinion. My opinion can sometimes be bias because I like Cam so much and want to surround him with weapons so badly.

depends on the price of keeping Hardy.

There's a line that you can't cross that sacrifices the betterment of the overall team. He crosses that line, trade him immediately. Our D might suffer a little bit next year for it. But with all those picks. we have a real chance to build a dynasty because our core players are so young. Just have to hit on the picks.

And that was one of the main problems with Hurney, he'd constantly cross that line. Hurney would sign one or two guys to stupid deals which wouldn't allow him to fill other needs with decent players.

If we traded Hardy for a handful of picks, it would also allow us to go for decent FA's like Tillman. It will be interesting to see what happens. Plus we have Cam and Keek's contracts coming up as well.

A good, smart offseason this year, could have DG sitting pretty in his office for quite some time.

Matthews, not even close...better route runner. Better speed, Better hands. More production with a worse QB in a better conference, for three years...let's not forget Benjamin was nothing without Winston. I don't see how it's even close. Because he's big? Ramses Barden is big, Dwayne Jarrett was big. How are they doing?

Why do you think Matthews has hit his ceiling? What evidence do you have that this is as good as he is gonna be? You never know how a guy is going to do in the big time. That just sounds like a lazy excuse to draft someone else.

I dont think he has, he just doesnt have the potential benjamin does. He is more polished though IMO and would have a greater immediate impact.

People here are enamored with his size, but i guess they forgot who the best wr in the NFL was for a couple years with Dehlomme at QB.

I totally agree.  To me Matthews is hands down one of the best football players in the draft and I don't get why people are disregarding him.  He just seems to understand the game and have the natural ability to seek the ball.  If a guy isn't 6'4+ or around a 4.3, it'll reduce the bandwagon size.

I'll tell you though...considering that our staff was looking at Keenan Allen so hard last offseason, I see us giving Matthews a ton of consideration.  He consistently had bad QBs and still was breaking records.  Just an excellent overall football player, disciplined, great route running, and a body of work to show for.  I see him having a huge ceiling.  People tend to tie the measurables with ceilings and it's bullocks I tell you, bullocks.  Plus he's still 6'3 205 ~4.45.

    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
