I dont know about anybody else but my mindset would be to score on every drive and thats by smart play, not stupid things like that

Cam sneak on 3rd and 8, no

Cam throwing 15 yards on 3rd and 2, please god no. Why are we throwing period. Tolbert, Stew, Cam...

Many times you do those things because you surprise the defense and keep them guessing.

Most defenses can stop the offense when they know what is coming.

I know but it dont work for us. So lets just keep the chains moving and tire the defense out

most plays have routes that are deep and short, up to QB to throw to the most open one

Generally true, but how often this year have we seen Shula repeatedly call plays with no checkdowns and nothing but deep, long developing routes that our OL can't provide the protection for?  Too often.

how can you say for certain there were no checkdowns on those plays?  there is usually a rb that comes out of the backfield after a chip block

I think basically what the gist of this tread is about is calling a good game, offensive wise.

And yea I agree we have to stick to our guns throughout and play to win the game, the playoffs aren't the time to give a team a second chance.  If there's a chance to step on their throats, we've got to do it.  IT's win or go home, and hopefully the coaching staff knows that more so than anyone else lol

That being said our offense was playing like poo that Saints game, so I can understand the draw on 3rd and 8 against the saints.

There is waaaayyy more checkdown, slants and shorter routes than last year.  Last year the first 7-9 games there were no check downs as Chud was trying to do his offensive mastermind ego trip thing. He finally figured it wouldn't work (after the season was lost) and started incorporating more runs and checkdowns.   This year there are a lot of shorter routes, checkdowns, etc. The problem being only Steve Smith can beat press coverage on a jam.  Ted Ginn is fast but weighs probably about 180 soaking wet, and he gets so disrupted on jams it's like he is not in the play.  Lafell can beat press but he loses focus and drops the balls a lot. Also we gets blitzed a lot on short yardage plays (8 in the box). Eight men in the box are basically daring you to throw.  That's why Steve Smith has so many 3rd yard conversions this year because he is probably the only person who can beat press consistently.  Ask yourself how many checkdowns has Cam missed the last 3 weeks compared to the previous 12 and that gives you an accurate representation to where the offense is.  Factor in the last 2 weeks being without SS and it's amazing we complete a pass.

We are 4th in the league in 3rd down conversion percentage at 43% which is pretty good.  However we are only like 34% the last 3 games.  If anything Shula has to make sure that Cam starts the game with a lot of easy completions.  When we get into a rhythm early it's smooth sailing.  Deangelo has twice as many targets as last year receiving as last year.

You keep hedging your comments with "usually" while requiring others to speak in terms of certainty?

not foolish enough to feel certain when im not in the huddle or know the plays.  anyone on here who feels certain about anything to do with playcalling on the field is fooling themselves.

edit:  rb's aren't the only possible checkdown options, a lot of times our guys block first then go out, i misunderstood what you were saying, my bad.

    • I dont think people realize how hard it is to find a consistent starting QB in the NFL. Byrce will not heart us to a SB but I do think he can manage to get us one or close..go all in on defense and change the Offensive passing game and play calls. I really think our biggest problem is our HC.  Take New Orleans QB for example, switch him and Bryce and I promise you it'll look similar or worse. New Orleans OC is levels ahead of Canales. And as far as the draft goes, in this division with as much rb talent as we face ..the answer...this guy:    Pick up a couple edge rushers in FA along with a corner and plug this guy in Rozeboom's spot. Defense solved. But only if we get a top tier rusher on that dline....jus saying
    • I think I'm going to the game in Los Angeles vs Paraguay, and the England / Croatia game here in Dallas since my mom is British.  For decent seats anywhere in the building(s) it looks like it will be upwards of $7k for the two games.  Insane. Just for perspective, you could buy field level EPL tickets for any one of the top sides in the league, and it would be 10% of the price you'll pay for crappy seats at the World Cup.
    • Meh… I knew this thread would turn into a Bryce/Tua comparison, when they couldn’t be further apart situations.   Dolphins catered there whole offense toward Tua, they brought in a coach that would run a Tua friendly offense, the went in got the best most explosive WR in the NFL and paired him the fastest WR in that years draft. Panthers have done the opposite, they went and got a Pete Carroll disciple who likes to run the ball under center, they drafted big slow WR who got little separation in college. Literally the polar opposite of Bryce’s scouting report coming out of Alabama.   Tua was a decent QB 2 years ago, but the concussions, lack of movement have caught up to him. He never had a great arm to begin with but now since he doesn’t want to get hit he’s taking the whole offense down with him.
