Carolina-Chuck's 2014 Overreation Mock After the Season

Ill go with it, he is much better than what we have at the moment, smitty is just getting old

Right now, we have "no" no.1 or no.2 receiver on the roster. Nada. LaFail should not be allowed back near Charlotte, and an old 89 and Ginn (FA) are no.3 receivers now.

I will not be satisfied with Gettleman addressing the WR through the draft only. It takes rookie receivers some times to finally get going, and especially late in the 1st round will not give us an instant contributor.

Gettleman really need to give Cam a legitimate veteran receiver (Nicks/Maclin/Jones/Tate) that he can rely on in tough situation. 1-2 rookie receivers work get the job done.

Love Love the trade and FA.  Nicks is going to come cheap, Tillman getting old looking for a ring isnt going to break the bank, Hardy gone.  Oher- should be enough to give him a decent offer.

Would love to see picks go though.

39- Calvin Pryor shooting up boards quick, he is here we jump on him

56- Best WR in left, One of Benjamin, Matthews, Moncrief will be here.  Any one of the 3 will be a stud under Proehl and mentored by Smith

60-Like the Moses pick put think he is going to fall to our 61 pick.  At 60- Kareem Martin, athletic guy but not quite big enough to play 3-4 end.  Again this may will be a big steal for us.  Not many teams will be gunning for a 4-3 DE in the first 2 rounds this year.  Had the WR/CB/OL class had not been so deep to go with a decent amount looking at QB, we luck up and have one slide right into our hands.  Martin started his career at unc off real well, then fell off but had a solid season.  Similar to Hardy was Martin was thought to be a first round talent 2 years ago.  In State kid to.

61- Colvin/Fuller or BPA Corner

3rd round-Love the Williams pick

4th- Jean-Baptiste Big athletic corner who is still raw to the position.  Would normally be a 2nd round type guy but with all the corners coming out will slide right down to us.  Instead of throwing him right into the fire, Having a Vet in Tillman who has played under Rivera under this system will be very very Good for the 2 young Corners.  Big problem we have now with the guys we got is really dont have a true Vet back their to mentor them.  White, Captain, and Norman will fight for that Nickel spot.

5th-Depth for OL/DL

7th-OL/DL depth depth depth

2014:

QB: Cam

FB: Tolbert

RB: Williams, Stewie, Barner

TE: Olson

WR: Smith, 2nd round pick

WR: Nicks, Ginn

LT: Gross

LG: Amini

C: Kalil

RG: Kug

RT: Oher

DE: CJ

DT: Star

DT: KK

DE: Martin

OLB: Blackburn/Klein

MLB: Luke

OLB: Davis

CB: 2nd round pick, Captain

CB: Tillman, Jean-Baptiste

FS: Mitchell

SS: Pryor

#1 Defense top to bottom, one of the better D the league has seen in a while

Don't overhaul the OL but add enough to get the job done

Added Weapons to help Cam, Help the RB's running lanes, and Help the OL with pressure

Now 2015 With a 1st and 2 Seconds.  I would not hesitate one bit to trade our 3rd away to move up in the draft.  Secondary looks building and shored, WRs have the help, DL still built well.  with that traded up 1st pick.....yes I hate to say it, even though we just drafted Williams...........Todd Gurley.  With his Combo of size and speed he looks to be a potential top tier RB.  With less holes and 2 seconds trading away a 3rd to move up to grab him would just be unfair.  The 2nds you Double up on OL or if Davis looks to be slowing down a LB.  Young Deep across the board D, 2 STUD RBs for Shula, WRs that catch a ball for Cam.  After that your in a situation like NE where you just start adding depth.  The 2 RBs make it easier for Williams/Stewie to go bye bye.  When they are gone that Big chunk of change is used to resign the guys were building around the team plus extra change for gettleman to play with

Not about trading the 28th pick. Especially if Kelvin Benjamin is there! Josh Thomas has to go.

We all love Benjamin, but I'm wait till close to the draft and if there's any sources to back it up that Gettleman likes the kid. Right now, I dont believe that he's on the top of Gman's list. I dont want to call Benjamin a one year wonder, but he's pretty much is. And, just going off my mock, Benjamin could even really be there at 39.

Josh Thomas does need to go foreal tho!!!!!

FREE AGENCY:

(1) Hakeem Nicks, WR

HakeemNicks_zps68c5b5b1.jpg

Trading away Greg Hardy will again initiate the Hakeem Nicks to Carolina rumors. The relationship is there with Gettleman (NYG), Nicks being from Charlotte, and especially due to the need at WR. Nicks is still a very good receiver in the league, but will be had for cheap due to his two previous mediocre (statistically) seasons.

Chuck, we usually agree on lots of things but I'm really not for bringing in Nicks.

He's never been one to get great separation and he's not getting any faster. He does have great hands and plays big, but I don't have faith in him to stay healthy and I REALLY don't want signing Nicks to be a reason we wouldn't go WR twice in the first 3 rounds of the draft.

Maybe if Nicks came here on a one year deal and really wanted to prove something it could work, but if DG gave him a 3 year deal I'd be worried.

I do agree we need someone with experience and don't want to rely on 2 rookie WR's right out of the gate, just not sure Nicks is the guy.

Agree on Hardy trade, will leave the FA alone for now, but I might do this with the draft.

1st..  OT  Lewan (some have him now dropping to late first) we can only hope

2nd(from Jags) WR Matthews (agreed)

2nd  OT  Moses (agreed)

3rd   CB  Aaron Colvin (agreed)

4th   WR Robert Herron - very fast (Steve Smith replacement guy)

5th/6th/7th  OLB/S/RB

Overall good though, hoping Gman thinks outside the box also

Of course we do. We always agree lol.

Nicks has always been a very good receiver until this season. I just think that his contract affected his plays this season. Even though he couldn't find the end zone this season, he's def a receiver that can get there. People wants to pay attention to Nicks alone, but that whole NYG squad was bad. Eli Manning is also very overrated, so you cant really put all the blame on Nicks.

Hakeem Nicks and Jeremy Maclin are really two receivers who has very little leverage to use in FA. Both will most likely play on "1 yr" contract and Maclin has already begin to accept it.

“I understand it could be a possibility that [the ACL tear] may scare some teams off, or a team may want to do a one-year deal as opposed to a long-term contract,” Maclin said. “That’s the game, that’s the business.” (PFT)

I really like the idea of drafting two young receivers but it's just not going to work. Rookies take too much time to develop. We would really be slowing down Cam's development. Smitty has aged so quickly that I'm not even sure if he can be half the player he was this season. We need to give Cam a young receiver to develop with, but most importantly a veteran that he can rely on heavily. We saw how big Boldin has been for Kaepernick. Same need to be done for Cam.

I really hope you are right. I would run naked outside if Lewan was to fall that far right into our laps. I just cant see it though. Let's remember that the OT position just got a lot more value due to Cameron Erving and Cedric Ogbuehi returning to school. A guy like Morgan Moses could eventually now be a late 1st.

I really need to do some research on Herron. I've seen a couple of mocks that has Herron mocked to us, but wasnt sure what to think.

But, overall I'd run away with your mock if that was to happen.

you're right about the two OT's not coming out and how it might pull other guys up.

I just hope we can do like a lot of others who pick in the late twenties, namely the Giants and some of them who always seem to come away with a guy nobody thought would be there.  When the Panthers pick, I want the announcers saying "the rich just got richer".  I have such hope in Gman after last draft.

Star, Short, AJ Klein were big contributors this season.

My attempt was just hoping, like always.  Hate the Panthers are in the offseason now, but combine next month and we have a lot of speculating since we haven't been doing it full time since Halloween.  HaHa

Yup, that's the thing. There are teams that always draft late in the draft that always position themselves to get richer (draft picks) whether it's now or next year: New England, SF, Seattle.

I just hope that Gman can come in and change the culture. Not just by being able to draft talents, but also pile of picks for the future. SF has been killing it the last three years by stocking up draft picks.

    • I see they blamed Slavin for the goal like I did.
    • See this is the problem, you say "can't get off the line quick" and "can't separate quick" but in reality it's "he can get off the line better and create more separation" which are two completely different things. If he couldn't get off the line or separate, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did and end up a Top 10 pick. But he can get better, and maybe more accurately, consistent with them both, and that will take his game to the next level.  These are things that are also much easier to improve once you get to the NFL than things like being a poor route runner or having bad hands, two of his strengths. Thinking he can't get open in the short passing game also shows you haven't watched enough tape on him, as he was used in that role so much in college with little issue getting open and making plays. And him not using his physicality as much isn't even something that hurts his game because he's so much more agile than a player of his size should be, which he used to his advantage.  Instead of throwing passes where he'd go up and box out a player like a TE or Mike Evans does, they use his athleticism and put the ball in places that only he can get to it, and he usually does (and yes, he'll still be able to do that against NFL DB's with his catch radius). But now that he's in the NFL, I'd like to see him get stronger and add that to his game because it also will help him take his game to another level. As I've said before, if he doesn't improve on those things at all, I think he's a Top 25 WR in this league, he's already that good.  But I think he'll improve on those things and be a perennial Top 10 WR and in his prime is considered and perform like Top 5 guy in some years. My expectations for him this year at 800 yards and 8 TDs (although I do think he'll get to 10 TDs) with a real chance at getting to 1,000.  But those expectations are because I think Thielen will lead the team in yards with close to 1k and XL/Coker each end up in the 500-600 range themselves, just too many mouths to feed this year for a rookie to dominate yardage, especially if we're running the ball well again. But if Thielen can't stay healthy or puts up sub 750 yards, then yea, my expectations for T-Mac likely shift to getting to 1k as a rookie.
    • Svech only 1 goal behind the guy they've pretty much already given the Conn Smythe to...
