Son of a Beach--Mock Draft I

Aloha there.  Here's my fake draft thing with added effects for your viewing pleasure:

Some picks may seem unlikely atm but I'm projecting risers/fallers and picking BPA with our needs in mind. No trades but as mentioned a tag & trade w/Hardy is possible-ish.

beach's mock draft I

1-28

Marquis Lee WR USC

I think Watkins, Evans, and Benjamin will be gone at the least but Lee could fall just as Star did to us last season.  Furthermore, I don't see a top-10 team hurting that badly at the wideout position.  The Ravens, Jets, and Chiefs are the one's with the obvious need.  Because of this, someone could very well trade up for Watkins/Evans but as things stand Lee (and yes Matthews) are in good position for us.  I am not a fan of Martin or A. Richardson at tackle.

2-28

Jack Mewhort OT Ohio State

My personal favorite at the tackle position.  He's a pure RT and a very well rounded lineman.  Helped anchor a potent offense and is a scheme fit.  He may rise to the mid-2nd but this is a strong possibility.

3-28

Brandon Coleman WR Rutgers

Double tap on the wideouts while a big guy is still available.  I feel the likes of Cooks, Matthews, Robinson, Landry, & Beckham will at the least go ahead of him and he could be there in round 3.  He had some inconsistencies but his size and ability makes him extremely enticing.

4-28

Kenny Ladler S Vanderbilt

One of my favorite prospects in the draft.  I was actually drawn to him last season and he kept playing at a high level his final year at Vandy.  This kid's got a lot of tenacity and considering the defense that we've become think he'd be a great fit in the secondary.

5-28

Antone Exum CB Virginia Tech

I may be biased because I'm a Hokie but I've seen this guy play a lot and he's just as for real as Fuller.  He could rise in the coming months but his injury may make some cautious.  He's a very smart player and I see him continuing the strong Hokie secondary trend in the NFL.

6-28

James White RB Wisconsin

I think we make DeAngelo a summer cut and that will leave a spot open.  White would be a good fit in our offense and I like the combo of being shifty and a tackle breaker.

7-28

Jonathan Brown OLB Illinois

Late rounder OLB to have behind TD.  I think there will be a lot of OLBs taken in the first 3-4 rounds in the draft.  It's a very solid class.

That's it.  I'll wait until post-combine to do my 2nd.

i have no beef with this. your 1st and 3rd picks was something i was going to put into my mock draft.i can really see Lee falling to us, and we should pounce on the opportunity to get him.

what injury did Exum suffer from besides the ACL?

It was a minor ankle injury but nothing too serious.  It may give people the sense he's injury prone but he really isn't imo.

My notable FAs would be:

WR - Jericho Cotchery (very solid vet who can definitely help this offense)

CB - Alterraun Verner (maybe on the pricey side, but if we have the money to spend on 1 given starter, it's Verner imo)

LT - Jordan Gross (I think he actually has 2 years left in him and I feel we can keep him on a reasonable deal.  He's arguably the leader of the team)

WR - Ted Ginn Jr. (I can see him wanting to stay since he resurrected a career here.  Can still get him on the cheap side)

DE - Everson Griffen (Haven't seem him a lot but on paper he looks like a Gettleman signing)

The roster would look something like:

QB

Cam Newton

Derek Anderson

RB

Jonathan Stewart

James White

Kenjon Barner

FB

Mike Tolbert

Richie Brockel

WR

Marquis Lee

Steve Smith

Jericho Cotchery

Brandon Coleman

Ted Ginn Jr.

TE

Greg Olsen

Ben Hartsock

Brandon Williams

OL - Gross-Wharton-Kalil-Amini-Mewhort

DL - Johnson-Star-KK-Alexander (Addison, Griffen, D'wan)

LBs - Davis-Kuechly-Klein (Blackmon, Williams, Brown, Senn)

CB

A. Verner

Melvin White

Antone Exum

Drayton Florence (re-sign)

S

Mitchell (re-sign)

Ladler

Lester

Colin Jones

(Mikell is a maybe)

I see some mocks putting Exum as a safety at the next level.  What's your take on his run support?

imo, terrible!

Exum is built like a safety and plays like one. Probably will be one.

Very good and coverage but is scare to make tackles. A big lack of effort too. Seems like he try to let other teammates make the hit first.

When RBs get to the outside, he sometimes can be antsy but I think he's a very solid tackler.  He just gets too aggressive and it's to his detriment and the shiftier types can slip past him at times.  I really like his versatility but his run support is a reason he's rated further down in the draft.  Nothing he can't fix though under a River-McD squad.

This is a good analysis imo:

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
